I wish social media had a filter that could filter of the fake and B'S people vs. People that are more in tune with themselves and others. People get off on making people feel bad and being an a-hole. Social media is FILLED with them. And to circle back, these people that get off on making people feel bad and trying to bully others.... in real life, they are dorky, shy, awkward people. (Not all of them but a good majority) . I say that because no one should entertain themselves by being a complete A-hole online but then in real life be someone different.

There are people online who only post online so they can point their fingers at what other people post!

They never post anything individual or interesting, but they still act like they know it all.

They are trapped inside their own little ignorant existence.

It's best to just ignore them. :)

I just watched a great documentary on Netflix called "Fyre Festival" ...  Talk about social media issues. They used social media to spread false promises to a festival that never happened.

I highly recommend for those who haven't seen it, to watch it. Very interesting.

I’m honestly so thankful to have social media, I’m in a mums/mums to be group mostly Aussies and being able to talk to other mums about things with no judgement is helpful as hell.

Partner is in a dads/dads to be group and they all support each other.

It helps to have people to ask, I know mum groups you can visit exist but when you cannot go out (for what ever reason. Currently for us it’s baby is newborn so we’re avioding going out yet and I’m healing not just from her birth but the epidural couple issues there and them needing to cut me to help her out) or have people in your area that aren’t the type you want to socialise with it’s hard.

Also dads found smaller jobs (tradesman) online, which helps him a lot.

I guess what im getting at is social media is the expansion for things evil as well as good. Of course there are good things that come from social media, but like anything else negative effects happen. But i just always see social media as more negative then positive. People create these negative groups either it being 'lone wolves for terrorist activity' or hate groups... etc ... so many people are part of those groups and its because of social media that these people can link up together and either 'plan' something or its a way to share terrible ideas and thoughts. And like i said earlier, people love to hide behind a keyboard and bully people. Any online article, when you read the reviews/comments at the bottom, the majority are just people being smartasses - etc.   I know i've said it often, but when i joined this site in 2003 the community was completely different. People were all about everyone, and it was a great atmosphere. It still is, no doubt. however, there are more people on here that enjoy stirring things up and going after individuals. Im not sure why and where this came to be? When did social media become negative towards people. Its weird, as social media grew, people became more negative towards others and I do not understand why that has been the case?

People are more negative on social media because they're able to say things (often anonymously) that they couldn't say in public without social repercussions.

As I've said before, social media merely amplifies what's already there. The good becomes great, and the bad becomes worse. There are numerous examples one could site of charity organizations that wouldn't exist today without it, and other civil rights movements were only spurred on thanks to social media. While at the same time there are plenty of examples of hate groups that now exist due to social media.

It's merely a tool that does both good and bad. It exists now, and apart from the apocalypse it's never going away. The best thing to do is to go after the people misusing it rather than the platform itself.

This is the only social media I use and for the most part when at work my phone is in the car unless I am expecting a work-related call. One time I had my phone with me at work because I was expecting a call from an inspector and I had a chat app that I used to talk with one person. For some reason, a girl that I do not know contacted me and was trying to chat me up and I asked who are you and why are you contacting me and that I am at work and expecting a business call. She kept trying to chat it up an told me she was feeling naughty so I told her that 'look I am standing on a 20' ladder trying to do something and need both hands and didn't care how naughty she was feeling".

I can live without being digitally tethered to the rest of the world, I work alone most of the time and am quite comfortable to be left with my own thoughts when working. When I am here then fine I enjoy the discussions because I come here to relax and read mostly.

We would never know that the Fake News Media are VERY VERY BAD. :(

I knew in the 80's before social media and even before I found internet.

Oh look. People reminiscing of the "good ol days" of yesteryear as if things were better in the past. What great totally original insight people have. Much wow.

So you can't imagine a happier time than now?

I'm sure that in many ways for many people, there were certain aspects of the past that were better than today. Though overall in a broad general sense, society is better off now than at any other point in human history.

The vast majority of human history is littered with war, bloodshed, famine, disease, human rights abuses, etc. It wasn't even that long ago that segregation was law, and LGBTQ rights didn't exist in the slightest. Things may have been quite fine and dandy for your average white family back then living in middle America, but that sure isn't the case for a lot of other people back in the day.

History is just that, history. Better off thinking of addressing problems in the present in hopes of building a better future.

Most of the things you mention are still going on, even in our priveledged 1st world society.  War, bloodshed, disease, human rights abuse etc.  We don't have famine in the 1st world countries, but there is famine in many parts of the 3rd world and a lot of that is due to OUR wars and exploitation.

True. We still have a ways to go, but there's a lot less of it now compared to back then. That's all I'm saying dude.

Not to mention the numerous civil rights and activist movements around the globe that have been mobilized in large part due to social media and the internet.

You can site examples of negative movements doing the same, but you can't deny the impact of the positive movements that have happened because of it.

I confess I haven't read the entirety of this thread, so this might have been talked about already, but this quote above is crucial.

I've been out with friends who couldn't stay off their phone. People at work gotta sneak into their phone too. People on dates check their phone. I think with anything, moderation is a good thing...

But the ability to connect with like-minded people anywhere in the world is a good thing. It's great when people with badges and guns are caught on camera doing bad things to innocent civilians. Evil hasn't increased at all--not at all--with social media. What social media has done is expose evil.

I would love to sit down with my friend or family member, have some coffee and just talk. Or go camping. We can still do these things. Social media just adds to our tools. Yes it's taken over some people's lives, like an addiction, and that isn't good. But I need to cut down on my sugar intake too. Sugar should be in moderation or it, too, is unhealthy.

I see nothing wrong with social provided it is used in the right way. For example when wanting to talk to friends or family that may live across the world or thousands of miles away. Now if it comes to the point that you become addicted that it interferes with your real life, then yes you may need to cut down on its usage.

Life was not better before. People were mostly ignorant of what went on in the world. Not anymore. Thanks to computers and social media we can and should do our own research. Just don't believe everything you read - or see.

Thanks to social media most people are still ignorant about what really goes on in the world but instead they are misinformed in a way to keep them emotionally unstable, erratic and easily controlled/manipulated.
