Anyone play piano?

I'm just starting out and could use some tips if you have any.

I have played stringed instruments for years, but i'm new to piano.

No, but I admire your willingness to learn a new skill.  I can't help laughing at the mental image of those big, hairy digits trying to tickle the ivories, though ;)

Are you using an actual, full-sized piano or a digital keyboard?  If I were to try to learn, I'd need to do the keyboard with headphones :w00t:

if you do not read music then don't feel a need to... just sit & tinker & enjoy the feel of it.

music should come from the heart, not from a piece of paper;)

Got a nice keyboard off craigslist with a stand and stool for cheap. Decent quality. My brothers wife has a baby grand if i ever so desire to play it.

I have one in my bedroom. It's easier than a stringed instrument ( at least bass) I just tinker though.

My biggest issue is hand independence right now, though I'm sure it will come with time.

I'd even wager to say i'd be a bit beyond beginner level if i could get both hands to play

Like my piano teacher used to say, "one finger at a time before one hand at a time"

I stopped at around grade 2 Yamaha school though and went full blown rock 'n roll , not that I was any good mind you, I was encouraged towards the vocal side of the tunes as my ear hand coordination left much to be desired ...

Good luck!

Perhaps this can help you? I did something similar when I started out...

Then I'd go for Für Elise...

When you've mastered that one, you're ready for some Mozart! :D

That will come in time. Because of the lack of left handed shooting equipment and musical instruments I encouraged myself to be ambidextrous. I became a "dual swordsman" after my right hand was shot in half. It took about 2 years to teach it what my left hand "knew".

Is that when you can jerk it with either hand? I must be like a savant then

I play. I suggest you practice. Lol.

Those big gorilla fingers might get in your way, though.

My mother taught me three chords a long, long time ago.  At some point I started playing them with both hands...right hand just hitting the same notes as the left but not all at the same time.  My sister is a life long pianist.  Me...not so much...I dabble...
