Debates, discussions are neither good nor bad. It's about the level of the discourse. When it becomes personal though, it's never good.

True. 

I’ve noticed people who try to turn it personal on me like to currently go after what I’ll be like as a parent. 

 

You and I could have a friendly debate on taste in let’s say food, neither of us would resort to personal attacks.

It’s not our style.

Yes, never presume someone's intent when given, a statement you're at first shocked by.

A good, healthy "WTF did you mean?", is always a better first response. Give them time to explain.
