Mission Shakti: Space debris warning after India destroys satellite

The acting US defence secretary has warned that the testing of anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons can create a "mess" in space after India destroyed one of its own satellites on Wednesday.

Patrick Shanahan said the US was still studying the Indian test, which Delhi insisted it carried out in low-earth orbit to not leave space debris.

India is the fourth country to have carried out an ASAT test.

China provoked international alarm with a similar test in 2007.

"NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine called India's test of an anti-satellite weapon a "terrible thing," creating debris that could threaten the International Space Station.

During an agencywide town hall at NASA headquarters on Monday, Bridenstine said 400 pieces of orbital debris have been identified from the missile test conducted last week.

Bridenstine said as a result of the test, the risk of the International Space Station being hit by small debris increased by 44% over a period of 10 days."

Not to minimize what India has done as this is obvious sabre rattling aimed at Pakistan, but is the USA in much position to criticize? We shot down one of our own satellites in 2008 , imo to intimidate North Korea and China

INS Arihant left crippled after ‘accident’ 10 months ago

They also crippled their own nuclear submarine due to a hatch being left open. Seriously.

Quote

Indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant has suffered major damage due to ''human error'' and has not sailed now for more than 10 months, say sources in the Navy.

Arihant is the most important platform within India’s nuclear triad covering land-air-sea modes.

Arihant’s propulsion compartment was damaged after water entered it, according to details available with The Hindu. A naval source said water rushed in as a hatch on the rear side was left open by mistake while it was at harbour.

The Ministry of Defence did not respond to questions from The Hindu.

India new world superpower 2020?
