+susieice Posted March 31, 2019 #1 Share Posted March 31, 2019 Scientists have known for a while that volcanoes have been active in the arctic and playing a role in the melting of glaciers. https://weather.com/news/climate/news/2017-10-25-arctic-sea-ice-volcanic-eruption-trigger-melting They have also been found under Antarctica. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/12/scientists-discover-91-volcanos-antarctica Our planet is becoming very active.
Raptor Witness Posted March 31, 2019 #2 Share Posted March 31, 2019 (edited) Several years ago, I posted a hypothesis here on these boards, which suggested that global warming would alter volcanism, due to the decreased absorption of heat coming up from the earth's mantle, mostly from the change in ocean temperatures. The ability of the earth's deep oceans to absorb change is not a new idea. Quote In one of his last publications before his death in 1957, Carl-Gustav Rossby, a legendary atmospheric scientist, elegantly summarized the importance of the ocean within the climate system as: "Anomalies in heat probably can be stored and temporarily isolated in the sea and after periods of the order of a few decades to a few centuries again influence the heat and water-vapour exchange with the atmosphere." - OceanScientists.org The increase in volcanism is possibly the safety valve, of sorts, eventually cooling the planet due to disbursement of Sulfur in the upper atmosphere. There is a substantial delay, in the heating of earth's upper ocean layers, before change is observed deeper. This delay is likely where we are now. The change in the mantel's temperature could have a far more dramatic effect than the atmosphere, alone. Even small variations could result in a change in density of the entire planet. Add to this, the decreasing weight on the crust due to melting ice and the weight redistribution, and you have an overall expansion of the entire planet. We know very little about what this change in density, and a redistribution of mass might mean. However, we could theorize that widespread earthquakes might be one. +susieice Posted April 1, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted April 1, 2019 (edited) Major volcanic events altering the Earth's environment and causing extinctions may have occurred 10 times in the past 3 billion years. Hadean Eon. Archean Eon. Proterozoic Eon. Paleozoic Era. Mesozoic Era. Cenozoic Era. http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Geological_history_of_Earth Man's ego is bigger than his true power over his planet. Not saying climate change isn't helping, but the planet will rule. We will never conquer it imo. Edited April 1, 2019 by susieice
aztek Posted April 2, 2019 #4 Share Posted April 2, 2019 so ice melt has 0 to do with co2 emissions, wow, who knew
