My *Bigfoot* Experience

Okay, this isn't much... but I thought it bore placing here.

Back in 1974-75, while completing my 4 year enlistment in Virginia, I had an opportunity to travel to Ohio for the weekend visit to a fellow marine's home.

We had been driving through West Virginia making our way along a series of roads he claimed led to a larger Interstate heading to Ohio. It was beautiful countryside. As the afternoon drifted into evening and then onto the darkness of night ... I had to urinate. Urging my friend to pull over to the side of the road, I wandered off into a roadside wooded area in the dark. Now, I had a pretty extensive military background and training. I was taught to not let fear over take my sensibilities. While I stood there urinating (for what seemed forever) ... I immediately heard a noise off to my left that half circled me. I assumed it was my driving partner. Next thing I'm aware of... there's an incredible stench that is drifting in on the breeze that I'd been enjoying as we tooled down this coutryside road. I called out to my buddy. No reply. I have turned around and could see the lights of the car on the roadside through the brush and scrub trees. I had walked in about 15 yeards off the road. Again, getting no reply ... I obviously encouraged my bladder to finish its task. Zipping up ... I slowly back stepped a good 10-12 feet before turning to make a hasty retreat. I smelled that odor and heard the heavy rustle of branches and movement towards me right up until getting to within 7 feet of the car.

To this day... I have not a clue what it was.

I grew up learning how to hunt and track both big and small game. I'm a conservationist, outdoorsman, and I've had more than the average strange things happen to me when I was younger. As a marine that had served overseas in combat, I didn't think anything could unnerve me up until that experience. Whatever it was it was big. The sound of its motion was not like that of a bear running off . This object seemed to be focusing on moving in towards me. Curiosity? I dunno. I only know the stench was unbearable and the noise was strongly audible. My first thought was, "Where's my gun?" My second thought was, "What ta' hell?" ... and it was one of those rare moments when you lose track of time. Like everything comes to a stand still...

And... I don't even know what road I was on or in what area of West Virginia except we got to the Ohio state border in about 20 minutes after that incident. My buddy thought I was busting his *alls. I actually had him smell my outstretched arm sleeve and he got a decent whiff of the reamining odor.

End of experience...

Hi orcafresh, welcome to the forum! wavey.gif

That was a very scary story. I'm sure most would agree that, even

if they weren't 'urinating' at the time, they would be on the way back to the

car! laugh.gif

I've no doubt there was something out there, perhaps annoyed that another male creature was 'marking his territory'! rolleyes.gif

Yeah you've got some classic elements in your story. The "circling", the stench, and the moving toward as you move away. You were being escorted out, I think. You must have been near something that creature wanted to protect. I'm not certain you were actually in any danger.. reports of Bigfoot violence are not all that credible to my mind, and most of them are ancient now.

Anyway, could you describe the stench? Did you hear any other sounds? Perhaps a "grunt" or something? There are some described vocalizations of bigfoot and it'd be interesting to see how close yours comes to some others, if you heard them.

Thanks for sharing your story!

Orca fresh ,

I think I'm going to agree with Sidhe here . The animal was probably protecting something . I mean you where probably marking your territory in his space . Peeing out doors can be a dangerouse thing . Perhaps it was mating season , who knows what kind of trouble you could have gotten into.

I'm glad you got outta there O.K.

20 years ago people were telling the same old stories.  This one has one thing that makes it a made up story for me.

They are on a road alone and he has to urinate.  He doesn't hop out and go like most people would.  He walks 30 feet into the woods?   Nope not true.

I will stop bringing back old threads now.

@Myles "He doesn't hop out and go like most people would."

Maybe so, Myles. but that alone shouldn't turn his entire testimony to false, should it? Maybe there are other cars driving by. Anyway, good to see ya, bub.

The story comes off as b.s.

He was a hit and run poster, The story has many issues with it, the guy writes like a novice trying to come off as a professional writer, as colorful, detailed and dramatic as he is he left out an import thing, back to that in a moment.

he boasts of outdoorsman, military and hunting experence yet desires for the reader to accept that he is such a bumbling incompetent idiot he will go stumbling into the dark woods no mention of a flashlight, how did he see where he was going, no one with his credentials would do something that foolish.

And bears eat dead stuff roll in it they tend to smell.

The semi back roads i take to work and back on weekends is where i saw my first live bear now they have bear warning signs so no, i wouldnt go into the dark woods to whizz.

Yes, he didn't see it but it got 7 feet away. Precisely 7 feet. And why did he walk into the woods 15 yards to pee, at night like you said without a flashlight. I can walk down our driveway to the road 200 feet away, and it is so dark you cannot see a thing without a light on a moonless night.

Lifetime achievement award.  Thread is old enough to have its own children.

Every person has a different writing style however i have noticed that when a story is presented like this the more details do not help the case at all in fact they deeply hurt it by showing glaring holes in the story.

Bear? with newly eaten carrion stench?

I've always wondered about the 'stench' part.  I know that primates, including us obviously, can stink but do apes in general typically have as overpowering and far-reaching stench as Squatch supposedly does?

I've wondered about that too.  I met a woman at a friends party years ago that worked in the primate section of the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and at some point she mentioned that chimpanzees and gorillas BO smell very similar to humans.  The obvious easy answer is there is no such thing as sasquatch (which I don't believe) and people are perpetuating elements of a lie which is at least hundreds of years old.  As an alternative theory (which I don't believe, but came up with myself a few minutes after reading your post) is that people who claim the presence of demonic entities often report a stench that is described similarly to sasquatch, and I know that some local tribes here believe that the presence of sasquatch is believed to indicate there is either something wrong in nature or something wrong with the nature of the person that sees a sasquatch, so maybe, assuming sightings are real, people that believe sasquatch is some kind of spirit entity have it right.

Could be, I think that's a better explanation, seems like this stench radiates at a greater range than normal animal BO but I'm not sure.  I'm not sure where exactly Bigfoot scholarship is nowadays but I think your alternative fits the data better, I'd think at this point that if it exists it must be some kind of supernatural or alien being or something.  Obviously all things being equal it'd be more credible if it was proposed to just be an undiscovered animal species but given the issue of biological evidence where there should be some I think it'd have to be something un-natural.

Yes, I think people think in two ways:

1) It is an undiscovered species of human/animal

2) It is all hoax/misidentification

When I think the answer is 'none of the above'. I think Bigfoot exists but has attributes we colloquially call 'paranormal' to the point where it needs a new 'category'

This is about a guy who smelled something terrible, and heard something approaching him.

That's it.

Could be anything.

My comment was directed towards Liquid Gardens quoted speculation on the very existence of Bigfoot.
