Philippine-Canadian Trash War

The Philippines are giving Canada 1 week to come get their trash.

Or they have pulled back on their "war" threat. (this one is hilarious)

well they do have legit claim

According to CNN Philippines, 103 containers holding 2,450 tons of trash were shipped to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014.
The containers were labeled as plastics for recycling, but inspectors in Philippines found the garbage was not recyclable. The trash was declared illegal as the private Canada-based company responsible for shipping the cargo didn't have import clearances.

as far as war, lol, i would not expect anything less from Duterte

This guy is really worked up! I'm guessing regular trash was sent instead of recyclables and it's been sitting there since 2014.

The president was referring to a large shipment of municipal trash that has sat in Manila since its arrival in 2013 and 2014. The more than 100 shipping containers had been declared to hold recyclable plastic. But when the doors were opened, customs officials found "household trash, plastic bottles and bags, newspapers, and used adult diapers," according to Filipino news outlet ABS-CBN.

"I will not allow that kind of s***," Duterte said at a news conference Tuesday, adding that Canada has attempted to provide educational grant money to the Philippines — on the condition that it also accept the garbage.

Dangling grant money in front of the Philippines on the condition they accept 100+ shipping containers full of our trash. We really are hiding behind a facade of inclusion and equality, just like the rest of the West.

OHH CANADAAAAAA

On Wednesday, Canada's Embassy in the Philippines said, "A joint technical working group, consisting of officials from both countries, is examining the full spectrum of issues related to the removal of the waste with a view to a timely resolution."

It added that Canada is committed to ensuring the waste "is processed in an environmentally responsible way."

Gotta add that last part lol

10 Leaf-bucks says we dump it in the ocean half way home and don't tell any one.

You're thinking maybe it wasn't a mislabeled mistake? Why would anyone just ship their garbage there? That would really be expensive.

It seems the company that brought it over didn't have import clearance.

The Philippines has been calling on Canada for years to repatriate its trash. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in the past that he was "very much engaged in finding a solution" to the dumped waste.

Where is the ****ing problem to return lousy 103 containers, moron?

The issue of recyclables contaminated by garbage has come up before. It was between China and the United States, I believe. People are sometimes careless about what they throw in their recycling bins. The results may be shipped overseas, where they can presumably be recycled at less expense. The objection is that the garbage makes the recyclables less valuable, as the garbage must first be removed. That may very well be the case here.

There is also the matter of recyclables being clean. There are times when I'm not going to take the time to wash out a container that can be recycled. It's rare, but I do go ahead and throw it in the trash. Others may still put them in the recycle bin.

Yes. Last year China stopped importing waste citing it's own needs but there is no mention of just plain old garbage going there.

Why on earth would Canadians need to dump their trash half a world away?

From what I understand, they make money recycling other countries trash. This time they didn't get recycling. They got regular trash. How does a mistake like this happen? I'm thinking it was bagged up when it was packed into these shipping containers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Philippine leader Duterte has said the garbage is being packed and better be seaborne by May 15th. Canada has agreed to cover the cost of bringing the trash back but says the paperwork that needs to be done won't be finished before several weeks and they won't meet the deadline date.
