Australian Federal Election 2019

So if you're voting informally because you HATE the major parties, the people who win out most from that situation are... the major parties! Congratulations, you've shot yourself in the foot.

Choosing not to vote is just saying your opinion doesn't matter. If you want to pay a voluntary tax as well, great - good for you; but your opinion is still ignored.

If everyone did it - reductio ad absurdem - we'll just end up with people gaining office on fewer votes.

Keep the pie as large as possible. Don't give up your right to whinge.

One could argue that not voting was itself casting a ballot upon the candidates standing. None of whom reflected your opinion, none of whom you felt could act on your behalf in parliament, and therefore you elected to elect none of them.

That is true and its a passive way to make a statement.

So, ScoMo runs on a platform that can bes be summed up as “Bill bad” and “I’ll give you all a tax break” and Lo and Behold .... there’s suddenly no time for the tax break this year.

Anyone what to wager what the odds of either a “budget emergency” or “other vital immediate government business” happening until they hope that you’ve conviently forgotten that promise? Or will it be a “non-core” promise?

I haven't followed the politics but THIS^ is, to me, the most important aspect of any election.  The people have to decide on the rules of the system, then participate.

Maybe he's going for Abbott's record of broken promises.

You mean Peter Costello the former Treasurer?

They were both involved in a decision case years ago.

Edited my previous post. They were both in Howard's Cabinet.

Both were involved in a defamation case.

Clive Palmer can't directly donate money to the LNP, so instead he creates a party, spends millions of dollars advertising, directs all his preferences towards the liberal candidates and thus more or less ensures that the liberal/national candidates are elected. He is lucky enough to have no members of his own party elected so he doesn't have to pretend to stick to his promisesand meanwhile the LNP are there to ensure that his coal mines are still fine to operate.

It is a pretty ballsy strategy and shows a hell of a lot more smarts than I had ever considered ol'Clive to have.

There was a time where it looked very much like a government would be formed wherein the leader would be Abbott and the Treasurer would be Costello.

He's making promises he can't possibly keep.  It doesn't matter because he won't need to.

I have to say I'm cynical about his anti Chinese theme.

LOL anything to do with where his campaign tee shirts and posters were made?

Speaking as an Australian who didn’t have to vote in this election, I agree.

I was always struck by the way we as a nation discuss politicians. We hate all of them, all of the time. It was rare to find any normal Joe or Jane Bloggs who is not negative about Australian politics

I have wondered if this is because of compulsory voting.

It could very well be, as it forces people to get involved who don't want to be at all.

I've never been very politically minded; that is I am not interested in the politics, just the outcomes. And the means by which the end is reached often seems like such a convoluted process.

We live in a great country, but things could be much better. I just don't know enough to have any reasonable suggestions! (Other than: Get me in somehow and I'll be a good guy! Lol.)

Just for the record, the Coalition won 76 Seats and could reach 78 when all votes are counted, Labor can get maximum 67. Therefore they'll have a majority Govt which basically means they'll have limited opposition so lets see if Morrison keeps his promises.

He’s already begun to “unfortunately....” on one of them (tax breaks).

I just remembered that for a short period they would have been Members alongwith John Hewson also a Liberal.

There was also a Liberal John Watson in the Senate.
