Waspie_Dwarf Posted May 22, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 22, 2019 Giant impact caused difference between Moon’s hemispheres Quote WASHINGTON—The stark difference between the Moon’s heavily-cratered farside and the lower-lying open basins of the Earth-facing nearside has puzzled scientists for decades. Now, new evidence about the Moon’s crust suggests the differences were caused by a wayward dwarf planet colliding with the Moon in the early history of the solar system. A report on the new research has been published in AGU’s Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. Eldorado Posted May 22, 2019 #2 Share Posted May 22, 2019 "In the new study, scientists fed measurements from the GRAIL mission into a computer and ran 360 simulations of plausible cosmic collisions that could have caused the lunar asymmetry. "By "crashing" various-size objects at different speeds into the moon, they found that the most likely scenario to yield the weird lunar texture would have been a collision with an object that would have been about 480 miles (780 kilometers) in diameter."
