Camazotz: the Maya Batman

Recommended Posts

Eldorado

"In Maya mythology there is a god with a man’s body and a bat’s head, pointy ears and part of his face covered with a mask; they called him Camazotz. Does he remind you of someone?

"The Maya codex describes Camazotz holding a knife of sacrifices in one hand; and his victim in the other. However, there are no more representations of this god."

Nice god! Not!

. In Mesoamerica the bat was associated with night, death, and sacrifice

The head is where the similarity ends,  I do not recall the Warner Bros Batman killing people and doing sacrifices.

It also seems there are many different images of this Camazotz, here is another one...

He recalled that Batman, perhaps to the sadness of some followers of DC Comics, is not the first reference of an enigmatic anthropomorphic being with a man’s body and a bat’s head. The first world reference of something like that was the feared Camazotz.

Why sadness? Only the head is similar, everything is different.

So what if there was another image of a batman before?  There were cats and mice way before Tom and Jerry.

i thought that was a modern artists conception of batman comic character not any actual maya artifact.

like that old church that had a gieger looking alien gargoyle, it was added during a reovation but people mistakenly thought it was as old as the church,

Yeah, I've seen people say this. How can it not be obvious?
