Beto O'Rourke proposes 'war tax' as part of veterans' plan

Quote

Non-military households would pay a "war tax" to help cover the health care of veterans of newly-authorized wars under a plan Beto O'Rourke's campaign unveiled Monday.

IDK but I'd guess this might be the death knell for his campaign . Probably not a bad idea to throw out during the general election but considering that hes running as a democrat I think it comes across as tone deaf and a hard sell in the primary.

hold on, so for wars which haven't even been launched yet? This is for wars that the President might want to have one day?

Yessir. A war tax in times of peace as if our nation needed to be on any more of a permanent war footing.  I'd  personally like to b**** slap the dude

This bodes well for Bernie and Warren

Surprise! The "Center" in US Politics Is Very Progressive

Quote

Donald Trump, Fox News, and Republicans in Congress label proposals they disagree with "fringe," "radical," or "socialist."  Well, let’s see where the American people actually stand:

On the economy,76 percent of Americans favor higher taxes on the super-rich, including over half of registered Republicans. Over 60 percent favor a wealth tax on fortunes of $50 million or more. Even Fox News polls confirm these trends.

"As these proposals become even more popular, the powerful are going to intensify their attacks."

What about health care? Well, 70 percent want Medicare for All, which most define as Medicare for anyone who wants it. Sixty percent of Republicans support allowing anyone under 65 to buy into Medicare.

Ninety-two percent want lower prescription drug prices. Over 70 percent think we should be able to buy drugs imported from Canada.

On family issues, more than 80 percent  of Americans want paid maternity leave. Seventy-nine percent of voters want more affordable child care, including 80 percent of Republicans.

Meanwhile, 60 percent of Americans support free college tuition for those who meet income requirements.

Sixty-two percent think climate change is man-made and needs addressing.

Eighty-four percent think money has too much influence in politics. In that poll, 77 percent support limits on campaign spending, and that includes 71 percent of Republicans.

I could go on.

It bodes even better for Trump.

Most of those "progressive" Dems know neither Warren OR Sanders have any shot to win, so who will those progs vote for in the general election?  Trump.

I'm betting you will too!

Even the progs are starting to understand that Trump is the most anti-war president the US has had in over 50 years...that's why they are deserting the Dem party in DROVES.

You will too.  And when you do, and you hear someone yell "We've got another runner!"...just put your head down and keep running.

Then I would end the student loan program altogether at that point. It has been abused and look at it now, $1.6 trillion owed, some by those who are rich and simply refuse to pay it back.

Sounds like the Dems are having a crippling identity crisis.

I wonder who this bodes well for (probably Trump):

Chicago Communists Ecstatic Over Leftward Shift Within Democratic Party

Quote

American communists are very excited over the progressive shift happening within the Democratic party.

Kicking off its 100th anniversary celebration on Friday at the university of Illinois Chicago student center, Communist Party USA (CPUSA) vice-chair Jarvis Tyner "set the record straight" - telling a Chicago audience who greeted each other as "comrade" that "The truth is the communist party isn’t out to hurt you," adding "It will set you free," according to The Guardian.

Tyner suggested that while the party has differences between some Democratic Socialists such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the surge of progressivism has emboldened the Communist Party and attracted new members.

While that may be true, the current administration stands on the 20-30% side of most of the issues progressives care about.  Maybe Trump will change nothing, he has already said he does not think he needs to appeal to swing voters.  But even staunch Trump supporters might like better health care and cheaper drug prices.

There are not a lot of progressives that believe climate change is a Chinese hoax or that the noise of windmills cause cancer for example.   He might change his approach on some issues  or he may assume the Democrats are idiots and change nothing.

I don't think it matters.  None of the DNC candidates send a tingle down my leg.  More of a giggle in the belly.  In order to out do each other, they are going to have to campaign against the best interests of the nation.  It will be out-right war - no quarter, no prisoners.  Whoever survives the DNC Convention will have nothing left because it will have been expended on each other.  Trump rallies are just gearing up and he keeps setting new records and standards in improving this nation.  Progs will be lodged into a half-court game and Trump will be running the full-court press.

Yay free stuff. My first thought is that it's bs. I too was naive when I took out my student loans and then I was mad when I realized it was a racket and my school was first and foremost a business but I also had the understanding that it was ultimately my responsibility even if I felt bamboozled. So guess what? I paid them back. That's how life works.

Now Bernie wants to slam wall street with a 2.2 trillion dollar tax. That's fantastic. That's especially fantastic for everybody's 401k's and average Joe's investments. You guys are crazy.

And where does that money come from? Bernie says a Wall Steet tax, but does he imagine that's not going to ruin trillions of 401K retirements? If he only means speculators, then how would he get to 1.6 trillion? Over 20 years?

Nothing is ever free. All she would be doing is nationalizing all education. Then the price is paid by the tax payer.

Hell, at 50, I'd go back to school if it was free. Get a Masters degree. Even if it took ten years.

So, who is going to pay for housing and meals and books? Is that included, or will students still need loans? If incuded... I see a lot of permanent students coming up.

I've seen this arguement before. Everyone loves the base ideas, but then when told their taxes will go up 10% for each idea... The percentages drop to the 20s and 30s.

Every one wants "free" stuff and to never "pay" for it.

I think they should make mortgages and payday loans free too. Go get a 300 dollar advance, and then if you don't have the money on payday, the FedGov picks up the tab.

Any missed mortgage payments should be immediately paid by the FedGov also.

Stupid, IMHO. Own your debts I say.

It doesnt have to happen to everyone. Between a reprioritizing of our funds, marijuana legalization and taxation and the addition of wealth tax it doesnt have to be like the right wing tv hosts tell you it has to be

Conscience-Stricken Billionaires Beg 2020 Candidates: Take Our Money

Quote

In an open letter to the 2020 presidential candidates, 19 ultrawealthy individuals, including George Soros, Abigail Disney, and Liesel Pritzker Simmons, ask those running to “support a moderate wealth tax on the fortunes of the richest 1/10 of the richest 1% of Americans—on us,” writing that “the next dollar of new tax revenue should come from the most financially fortunate, not from middle-income and lower-income Americans,” and that it would be immoral, unethical, and economically irresponsible not to “tax our wealth more.” The letter—which comes days after Federal Reserve data revealed that since 1989, the top 1% have gotten $21 trillion richer, while the bottom 50% have gotten $900 billion poorer—notes that while a wealth tax may not be popular among, say, the current inhabitant of the White House, polls show that such a proposal “enjoys the support of a majority of Americans—Republicans, Independents, and Democrats.” (In fact, the group says, millions of middle-income Americans already pay such a tax each year “in the form of property taxes on their primary form of wealth—their home.”)

I say **** corporations that are charging outrageous and increasing rates for something that should be a basic human right.

This is why I cant be a libertarian. The corporations have too much power and we as a society have been conditioned to be their b****es.

That is the responsible thing to do.  So did I, but I ate a lot of 5 cent ramen in the day so I lived on the cheap and worked.

That doesn't mean it has to be free.  Clean up the crazy charges and make things more reasonable to keep the debts small.  My textbooks cost $10-15 new and I could by them used.   Textbooks today can cost upwards of $100 easy, and wages have not gone up 10x in the same time.

On the other hand, there is the possibility of  exchanging tuition for after graduation work.  I know little towns in Eastern Oregon, and probably all over the country that will pay medical school tuition  if the graduating doctor signs up to work in their town for a period of several years.  The doctor gets tuition and gets paid for his or her work, but probably not as much as he or she would in a large town.  Good deal for everybody.

Maybe that sort of thing could be expanded into other fields.  Seriously, I don't think we are producing enough scientists, engineers and technical people to stay ahead of China and India. It would be good fro the security of the country and economy if we signed up young people to work on projects we need.  Kind of a technical job corps.
