Direct result of policies enacted by Reagan. That neither Bush. Cli ton, nor Obama reversed.

Actually, it began in the fifties with the systematic dismantling and emptying of public owned and funded mental healthcare facilities.

And the mistaken idea that it would be better for them if families cared for them at home...families without the training or resources to deal with theses types of issues. It just placed a further burden on them.

Over half the homeless are permanently so and qualify for institutionalization. I'm afraid if the crisis worsens, this will be done, forcefully, into makeshift internment camps with all the attendant stigma and problems rising from it. Sanctuary cites, in many parts of the country, are losing their affluent middleclass, fleeing the waves of homeless being invited in by liberal politicians.

It's a crisis that I am afraid America is not handling very well. The continuing  increase in the percentages is what scares me. LA and San Francisco…?  yowzers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will become the first state to pay for some adults living in the country illegally to have full health benefits as the solidly liberal bastion continues to resist the policies of Republican President Donald Trump's administration.

Democrats in the state Legislature reached an agreement Sunday afternoon as part of a broader plan to spend $213 billion of state and federal tax money over the next year

yet some hard working Americans who pay into the system, whose taxes will be given away to illegals can not afford medical insurance.

but on the other hand let them, illegals will flood CA, and it wont end well.

Lanterman-Petris-Short Act:

Frank Lantern - Republican. Nicholas C Petris - Democrat. Alan Short - Democrat.

It was supposed to insure that people couldn't be be institutionalized without due process. Too bad laws rarely do what they're supposed to do.

Not only are there people who don't want to be counted, but it's hard to take a census of people who may move from day to day.  Another thing to consider is that homeless doesn't necessarily mean roofless.  A person who is couch hopping or staying with relatives is also homeless, but unlikely to be counted as such.

The real underlying problem of wage stagnation wasn't solved by the Federal Reserve's stimulus. Bailing out the banks just delayed the bust cycle, which is normal for a capitalist model.

I hear that next they plan to buy stocks, and bail out Wall Street like they did in Japan. Perhaps that buys them another, 5 years?

The promise of socialism is likely to gain a foothold, and why not?  The capitalist model doesn't work when you fail to allow both the boom and bust cycles to occur.

When you reward the losers, like the Donald Trump's of the world, we all lose. We really do need rich people, just not dumb rich people.

I'm not sure how your anti-capitalist screed connects to the post you quoted, but if you saw a connection, so be it.  People were homeless long before Donald Trump came on the scene.  He sure didn't cause it.  When I've been homeless it wasn't due to wage stagnation, banks, the Fed or any other macro-economic BS.  It was due to lapses in my own personal economics or flaws in personal planning, like picking the wrong woman.  When you don't know where your next meal is coming from or where you're going to sleep it doesn't matter if the whole world is rich or poor.  People thrive and fail in all kinds of circumstances.  There were rich people in the Great Depression and there are poor people in the best of times.  Statistics are like paints, you can use them to create any picture you want.  Homelessness is personal.  It happens because you lost your job, not because thousands of others did.  It happens because of your divorce, etc.  The only help I ever discovered was designed to help you survive, like feeding an animal in a cage.  There is no plan to help you get out of it.  For all the talk, committees, commissions, platitudes and amendments about homelessness the truth is that no one wants you.  They don't want you as a friend, they don't want you as a neighbor, and they don't want you as an employee.  But they do want your statistics so that if there are any more of you they can ask for more money and if there are any less of you they can pat themselves on the back.

Uh huh.

If you call Donald Trump "dumb", you naively display your own low IQ.

I can't stomach Hilary Clinton but I won't call her dumb, because she isn't.

well if lazy and dumb want socialism, we need to make an experiment in California, let them lose federal funds, and become a socialist state, we'll see how it'll turn out.

Dude don't you know they are like, the 16th richest country on Earth? Hence the rampant homeless population and why the middle class earners are leaving in droves. Duh.

California is already a failed experiment. When they removed the laws for HIV disclosure I knew it was a done deal. This is the kind of thing that gets a Hitler type elected - just sayin'...

California was crying bankruptcy when I was out there over ten years ago. State tax returns came in the form of an IOU. According to what I found, they are still insolvent.

Way to deflect

@Imaginarynumber1 and @GertdoggyReagan, my favorite president, cut federal funding to facilities that deal with people too crazy to care for themselves, so this is partly due to his policies, but I think that Clinton signed NAFTA and killed the manufacturing industries causing more damage than Ronnie as well as creating the prison industrial complex filling prisons with people that shouldn’t be in prison thanks to Bushes war on drugs but possibly the majority of homelessness is because of drug addiction. Can that be blamed on pharmaceutical companies or perhaps CIA black ops drug operations in which they imported heroine into the USA that the taliban had all but eliminated? Whatever the case I believe our government should take a great deal of the blame.

except, no one makes or forces you to start doing coke or heroin, or any other drug for recreational purposes., so the blame is solely on the user

Totally agree, but at some point addiction is more like a mental disease than a choice. And regardless I place a great deal of blame on government policies.

i honestly can't find a single gvmnt policy that makes anyone do illegal drugs. it is peoples choice.   no gvmnt helped or made that choice for them.

if their unhealthy addiction turns into mental disorder, i do not see why responsibility should be removed for a person who made the choice,.

You're right, they don't make you do drugs.  They punish you for a victimless crime.  Very hard for an ex-con to find work or a stable home.

very often drug addicts have to rob people and steal things to get money for drugs, so not that victimless in general.

yes there is a social consequence when you commit crimes. and why shouldn't there be?

it just is right now,  just like we have many other unjust laws that have to be followed, it is a side effect of living in society governed by laws.

are you implying we should just ignore and brake laws that we do not like, and it should be a norm?

  Sounds like a reason a parent gives a little kid for a rule they don't have a real reason to enforce.  So how do you like having the government be your mommy? :passifier:

How about this?  It just is right now in order to make money from imprisoning people.
