Media propaganda to boost tourism

Have you ever noticed blatant biased attempts by the media to promote events that are terrible with false propaganda.  e.g.  Stating the weather will be good during a key event to boost profit, when other forecasters said the weather would be bad.  Or a violent event taking place during a happy event, and the media does not report it as it would reflect badly on trade and profit during the event and they suppress the story.

Another example.  I've been to London many times during Royal events.  The Mall is always crowded with thousands of royal fans.  The problem is none of them can see the balcony, and the royal family can't see them as the monument to Queen Victoria completely blocks their view, but the media always neglect to mention this, and the vast majority of people see nothing.

Thousands of people (including me) taking time off work, spending a small fortune to get there, and seeing absolutely nothing.

Except a great big statue blocking our view of the balcony.  So they can't see us, and we can't see them.

I was surrounded by people who traveled a great distance (several from Australia) some laughed with a sorrow expression as we all saw nothing, and there was a stark realization among the crowd that we had all been conned into going by the media, because the media had created the illusion that the Royal family could see the huge crowd on the Mall and vice versa.  Every year during Royal events I feel sorry for the crowds who anticipate they will see exactly what the media shows them without realizing that the BBC news cameras are actually on the roof of the palace, above the statue, and not from the view of the balcony which is completely hidden from view.

 

Many years ago I filmed a sailing ship crashing into a dock during a maritime event, and when I contacted the local newspapers they said they were not interested because it would have reflected badly on the event and they were only interested in promoting good aspects of the event.

Any other examples of the media promoting events with propaganda?  e.g.  Stating a dismal low turnout event will be a fantastic entertaining event etc.

Wow, that's terrible.

Though, as someone who's never been to London, now I wonder, to whom are all the royals on the balcony smiling and waving in all those pictures and news footage? Just the (presumably) VIPs who get past the monument?

The crowd is slowly escorted down the Mall by the police, and the lucky bunch at the front get to stand in front of the statue, but the vast majority are stuck behind the statue.

The majority are on the Mall and can't see a thing and sadly the news cameras focus on this crowd and create the illusion that they can see the balcony by splicing the camera back and forth from the balcony to the Mall, yet neither of them can see each other.

Here's one I took.  In 2012 I managed to get to the very front of the crowd, but ironically that time I was 'too close' and had trouble seeing the Royal family through the bars of the palace gates.

I just looked up the statue...it's huge! Isn't there another balcony they could use? Surely a palace has more than one. Wouldn't it be something if everyone stayed home and watched it on tv just once...lol

Not really. The Palace is walled off on the other four sides.

How many have gone abroad expecting to stay at a hotel like the one they were shown in the brochure, but were not shown the building site next to it?

But today we have the means to read reviews on line, something i always do now.

So why don't they let the people into the court of the palace (or whatever the area between that gilded fence and the balcony is called)? It wouldn't be a perfect solution and those standing too close wouldn't see anything either, but at least there'd be more people who'd get to see.

I think it has always been that way, just with the internet the way it is (at least for now) it's easier to become aware of all the manipulation.

Oh...yeah... I was thinking it might be to ward of prospective thieves from breaking/sneaking into the palace, but yeah I hadn't considered that aspect and that in many ways it has been a concern since, at least the Gerogian times.

It's the same with any tourist event/destination.  Been like that for a long time.

I went to see the pyramids, I was sold a mysterious romantic experience out of time, with deserted Pyramids set against a setting sun.  What I actually got was severe sunburn due to the waiting times of seeing each attraction, tens of thousands of fellow tourists all stumbling over each other to touch see and smell anything that looked old and an army of child slaves shaming tourists into buying their gold coloured plastic souvenirs.
