A drug may prevent Alzheimer’s

An arthritis drug seems to significantly cut the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease – but there are no plans to find out if it really works.

Last week, The Washington Post reported that pharmaceutical firm Pfizer has data showing that an arthritis treatment it owns called Enbrel may also lower the risk of getting Alzheimer’s by 64 per cent. But, according to critics, Pfizer has elected not to develop the drug for this condition because the patent on it will soon expire, meaning the company won’t profit from pursuing it further.

Someone very close to me died of Dementia and I've known others that have developed it too.  It's debilitating and there is nothing worse than seeing someone you've known and looked up to, full of life, intelligent and charismatic fade away into a state of a 2 year old, incapable of even simple tasks like going to the toilet.  Alzheimer cases are growing at a rapid rate around the world and money shouldn't impede a possibility of giving people back some dignity in their lives before their final bell rings.  Govts need to step in and subsidise Enbrel if private pharmaceutical companies don't see the value in doing so.

Apprently many pharma companies are not interested in studying Alzheimer's medications anymore because it is long to do clinical trials, expensive, and they have all been failures.

If anyone ever gets a successful Alzheimer's drug it would of course be profitable. But apprently they are reluctant to risk captial on it. 

It's quite unfortunant.
