A stuntman has been declared missing after he lowered himself into the River Ganges while tied up with rope and steel chains for a magic trick.

Chanchal Lahiri, also known as Wizard Mandrake, was lowered into the river by a crane while his friends, family and police watched from the river bank on Sunday.

Before entering the cage, the 40-year-old reportedly said: "If I can free myself it will be magic, if I cannot it will be tragic."

After he performed the same stunt in 2013, he was assaulted by witnesses who claimed it was fake - accusing Mr Lahiri of exiting the locked cage through a visible door.

Well that is not magic.

Could be this trick did not turn out as planned this time, or his missing could be part of his trick. Will have to see if he turns up on the bank alive or gets washed up on the bank bloated.

That river is supposed to be so polluted that it would practically be "magic" to swim it and survive.

An Indian magician has drowned while attempting to recreate a stunt made famous by escape artist Harry Houdini.

The body of Chanchal Lahiri, known as "Wizard Mandrake", was found about 1km (0.6 miles) from where he was lowered into the Hooghly river in West Bengal state on Sunday tied in steel chains and rope.

His body was identified late on Monday, a day after he attempted the dangerous stunt.
