MH17: Four charged with shooting down plane

Recommended Posts

For the first time since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down in July 2014, prosecutors have announced charges against suspects in the case.

Three Russians and a Ukrainian have been charged with bringing a missile into the area in eastern Ukraine and with murdering 298 passengers and crew.

Passenger flight MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down over conflict-hit Ukraine.

A court case will begin in the Netherlands on 9 March 2020.

International arrest warrants have been issued for the four men.

So they're going to charge individuals?  What about charging Russia with bringing the missile system into the Ukraine to begin with?  I see nothing ultimately happening here.

Sure nothing will come of it as Russia will no doubt protect the perpetrators. Its about sending a message, same as issuing arrest warrants for the two agents who tried to murder the Skripals.

Thats a good question.

As Russia isn't officially in the Ukraine (its soldiers have Russia Federation badges removed) it means its personnel in the country are illegal combatants. That means they can be charged and prosecuted for terrorism or murder. Nothing will happen with the international arrest warrants because Russia wont hand over its men.

I`m surprised the Dutch prosecutors wasted their time over this because it achieves nothing. Russia will not officially declare war on the Ukraine and it wont give up its personnel. All this does is add a bit more incentive to keep the Russians isolated so they cannot build any bridges.

MH17: Driver who transported missile that downed Malaysia Airlines flight jailed

Ukrainian security services have confirmed the driver of a truck that transported the missile which shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has been in jail since 2017.

An official from Ukraine's State Security Service (SBU) Vitaly Mayakov told reporters at a press conference that the service had tracked down a man from Donestk, who was approached by separatists and asked to tow the missile.

Mr Mayakov, who is part of the SBU's Chief Investigative Department, said the man had been in prison since 2017 and is now serving a sentence.

He did not, however, name the driver or explain why the information had not been released earlier.

Update/Related news.... (emphasis mine)

"Dutch detectives have appealed for information about Russian officials who may have been involved in the shoot down of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 and released recordings linking the chief suspects to Moscow.

"The Joint Investigation Team, which contains detectives from five countries affected by the disaster, on Thursday released new audio recordings of intercepted conversations that it said suggested pro-Russian militants charged with deploying the missile were directed from Russia, despite Kremlin claims to the contrary. Australia and the Netherlands have launched legal proceedings against Russia through the International Civil Aviation Organization for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

The legal action could compel Russia to take part in stalled negotiations with the two countries, and could also result in it being penalised by the United Nations-linked organisation which is responsible for the administration of international aviation law.

Three men found guilty of murdering 298 people in flight MH17 bombing

A Dutch court has found three men guilty of the murder of 298 people on board flight MH17, which was shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile when it was flying over eastern Ukraine in 2014.

Russian nationals Igor Girkin and Sergey Dubinskiy and Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko were found guilty by the court.

A third Russian national, Oleg Pulatov, was acquitted of the charges.

In 2014, they were fighters for the pro-Russian separatist movement, the Donetsk People’s Republic. None of the men appeared in court and only Pulatov chose to appoint lawyers, who pleaded not guilty on his behalf.

The court on Thursday said Russia had overall control of the separatist forces in eastern Ukraine at the time when the plane was shot down.

Thank you Still Waters for the update. All those who are defending Russia or pretending they are neutral and yet still blame "Ukrainian nazis" for the war should read this and think again how, who and when this all escalated.

You do know that a Ukrainian man was just found guilty for downing MH17?

Nothing more than what we suspected all those years ago.   It was rumoured a few weeks back that Strelkov had emerged from his sewer and rejoined the fight - so he may even be dead now?

I havent followed this at all.

What was the motive to shoot down MH17, according to the court which tried these men without them being present?

I don't think MH17 caused the war. It was 7 years ago and didn't provoke Putin at all.

Australia has called on Russia to extradite three men found guilty of downing a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine with 298 people on board.

Two Russians and a Ukrainian have been sentenced to life by a Dutch court but are thought to be in Russia.

"We call on Russia to surrender those convicted, so they may face the court sentence for their heinous crime," said Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Russia condemned the verdict as scandalous and politically motivated.

It is extremely unlikely that the three men will be handed over to face justice.
