Officials kill bear after too used to tourists

A young black bear was killed after it had been spotted several times near Henry Hagg Lake in Oregon, state wildlife officials said. The bear had become "habituated" or accustomed to the area after people left food for it near Scoggins Valley Park, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials told CBS Portland affiliate KOIN-TV.

The friendly bear had been fed trail mix, sunflower seeds and cracked corn.

It also appeared in several selfies taken by park-goers.

I understand the danger here but damn... why couldn't they move the animal to a more remote area, tag it and at least give it a chance?  People can be so damned ignorant at times.

Well, it was a black, not a brown bear...so: less aggressive.  But be that as it may, people leaving their food trained the bear to come to them.  So the bear must pay with his young life to protect the people who lured him in.  Seems to me training the people would be more humane.  If we care about being humane anymore, that is.  Which I'm greatly doubting.

The same thing is happening in the tourist areas of Tennessee.  Black bears have been known to kill but they tend to have to be cornered or feel they are protecting cubs.  I wish there was a better attempt to educate people about the dangers - to the bears - of feeding them.  This poor bear's body should be photographed, including the actual death, and plastered all over the tourist areas.  I believe such a message might just get the attention of well-meaning folks.  They don't intentionally desire the harm of these animals.
