Update on the Peruvian Mummy - New Species?

Things are getting even crazier. Now paleontologist Clifford Miles has named the mummies as a new genus and species in a self-published paper. He is an actual scientist who co-described the dinosaurs Gargoyleosaurus, Hesperosaurus, Tanycolagreus, and Minotaurasaurus, but he seems to have gone off the deep end recently. Miles' former coauthor Ken Carpenter left a scathing review of the paper, so there's personal drama around the whole thing too.

Good, I’m glad Carpenter’s calling him out.

On a side note, I enjoy Carpenter’s books, especially his contributions to the Life of the Past series published by Indiana University Press.

My favorite bit is that these mummies have been handed around all over Peru and Mexico. Probably hundreds of people handling them, and there's still "loose dirt" on them and a big pile of dirt at the bottom of each cloth lined box.

Do they continuously generate more of the "preserving" dirt? LOL...
