There's a HUGE amount that could be cut before we even get close to that possibility.

You're right.  Somehow I skimmed over the word "waste" in responding to your original post.  The trouble is that it probably wouldn't make a difference in our taxes.  Congress would just find something else to waste it on.

Nobody would need to pay more taxes if we just decreased the ridiculous amount we waste on defense spending.

How about that $2.3 TRILLION that went missing on 9/10/2001? The sheer amount of "missing" cash alone makes it almost unbelievable America is still as wealthy as it is. There are sectors of the military that are black holes for tax dollars, untouchable by auditors. We literally have no idea how much is spent or what it's going towards. That is simply terrifying. We haven't even talked about bloated Government salaries or bailouts or bonuses...

Is it missing? Or is it going somewhere we aren't "authorized" to know about? I wonder sometimes....

‘We Are Part of the Problem’: Billionaires and Heirs Demand Wealth Tax.

(Bloomberg) -- They’re an eclectic bunch -- some of the nation’s most privileged heirs alongside entrepreneurs who have made spectacular fortunes in real estate, finance and Silicon Valley. But collectively they’re united on the need to tax more of the richest Americans’ assets.

“We are writing to call on all candidates for President, whether they are Republicans or Democrats, to support a moderate wealth tax on the fortunes of the richest one-tenth of the richest 1% of Americans -- on us,” according to a letter signed by 19 individuals -- one anonymously -- and posted online Monday. “The next dollar of new tax revenue should come from the most financially fortunate, not from middle-income and lower-income Americans.”

anyone else think it's nothing but PR stunts, or is it just me? if they want to pay more, they can send a check to IRS today. but they do not.

Yep. this is a subtle, Trump isn't taxing us enough, please elect some one else as President.

if the top 1% pay 30% of the tax burden then on a $3T budget, that would be: ~ $90B (for the top tenth).  Based on a 35% bracket, that's about $2.6B per percentage point.  So to increase the tax bracket to 40% (5% increase) would collect only an additional $13B.  At a 74% bracket, would push it just above $100B.  Obviously not chump change but certainly not enough to feed Prog spending welfare programs.  That's the top tenth that would never be able to invest in maintaining or increasing their business.  Not in a substantive level.
