All diplomats owe it to their home country to give the best evaluation they can of the government they are dealing with as an ambassador. The British government trusted this man as one of insight and good judgement. He did his job. He does not owe the US administration some debt to play nice and only say complimentary things. He served his government. Is there some reason he should apologize for communicating to his government in secret his best assessment? No, I don't think so. If the British government refuses to do so then their interests will take a back seat until they do. It's unfortunate that his opinions of Trump- which he is entitled to- were made public. That is how international diplomacy works, you don't let the other person know what you think of them, only what you want them to think you think of them. He can hold any opinion he cares to hold but when that opinion is insulting to the leader of the country he represents HIS country to, he has overstayed his welcome. Your PM's choice. Replace him or basically have your business put on a back shelf until you do. I don't see the aim of the leak to be the removal of an ambassador, Kim Darroch was due to leave in the next six months and going a few months early does not appear to make much difference to anybody. The leak only sours the diplomatic ties with the US and in so doing might affect the timing of any UK/US trade talks. Is it a coincidence that the leak emerged just days before Liam Fox was due in Washington for talks? I don't think so. If the chance of a US/UK trade deal could be cast in doubt it would make a potential no deal exit from the EU look more problematic to some in parliament and might swing any future vote on other options, like another referendum. It appears this is another intervention by the pro EU faction to stop brexit by any means possible. Given the potential fallout the individual responsible must have known the chance of an investigation and being discovered. This is non-news and Trump blowing a mole hill into a mountain as usual. The UK has the advantage of waiting a year and dealing with a new representative of the U.S. Trump is not king or emperor, he is president and that job has a shelf life.
