You have those homeless from all over the country because you tolerate that kind of behavior there. I wouldn't be surprised if other cities buy them bus tickets to Seattle and Portland. As for your pathetic declaration of victory……,.,

Political Cartoons by AF Branco

Here I am just outside Portland in a small town suburb. And two years ago it was the popular fashion to accept the homeless. So dozens of them moved into the downtown. Two years later, even the uber hippy, liberal, socialists are pushing to move them along. Arrests are up, as are bus tickets out of town. No one is pooping in the stores anymore, or ravaging the trash put out on Sundays, looking for cans.

Do we need to help these people? YES! Should we just let them sleep in a pile of rags on the city hall steps? Allow them to drunkenly assault people? No...

I don't know how to help them. But just letting them run around drunk and dangerous isnt the answer.

@OverSword Totally off topic but I think we're gonna make a MASSIVE life change (again) and leave the desert for coastal WA for a couple of years. Possibly Ocean Shores type locale.......any suggestions of small towns in the area to look into , or conversely ones to stay away from?

Are you looking for scenic and rural or bustling with international commerce?

What would be a good deterrent for "that kind of behavior"?

We have those vagrancy law thingies and enforce them. We offer public housing and help with addiction to the homeless,. If they eschew our offerings they can either move on, or enjoy the comfort of a warm bed and three square meals a day for eleven months and twenty-nine days in a drug-free environment. Rinse and repeat as required.

Hate? No of course not and I of course dont hate a people for their history.

Now if you are asking me to teleport back in time then this would be a good comparison to what we're talking about today. Only one of the people in this pic is a "very fine person".

So people can change and be judged by their current actions?

Trumps current actions are enough. Do we need to bring in the 1970s, when it was a different time?

I know you didn't ask me, but I think Newport, Oregon is a really nice little town and the county seat of what ever county it is.  And based on the software we had to update every year Oregon seems to be the most truly democratic state in the union.

I'm heading out to vacation in Newport in a couple weeks. Has a small town feel to it. Excellent beaches and food.

But it is very Republican, if that matters.

The only Washington coast town I know about is Long Beach just north of Astoria and the Oregon border. A nice small town.

Shipping them out to Seattle? You have to accept the fact that some people can't be helped, don't want to be helped and not your responsibility to make choices for them if spurned. As a community, you must assert yourself to define and enforce acceptable public behavior and to be wary of trampling the rights of all citizens to the opportunity of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, while coddling a tiny minority of intransigents.

You could start by sorting your trash so they don't have to rummage to get the cans.  The past mayor of Albuquerque started a program that picked homeless people up, fed them breakfast, put them to work for the city paying the 9 dollars an hour cash, fed them lunch and helped them find space in shelters.  There are never enough shelters, but at least it was help that was not a handout.  They kept parks and streets clean, painted fences and any other labor that was hard to find people to do.  It saved the city  money as they did not have to pay benefits like regular employees and the wage was less.  Then the current mayor came in and tried to make it illegal to give people on street corners money.  That was a big fiasco that caused a justified lawsuit.  Some cops still tried to write tickets after the city had lost the law suit and got themselves in trouble.

Why would it matter?  They don't keep democrats out so what ever your political leanings it is still a nice town.

When I was in 1st grade my mother was the first republican registered in the county we lived in.  She made the county clerk let her fill out the form herself as the workers were instructed to register everyone as democrat.  Since she did that the clerk gave her forms and told her to go register her friends, which she did, knocked on doors and asked people to register to vote and let them fill in what ever affiliation they wanted.   I remember because all four of us sat in that tiny clerks office waiting for an hour.  My brother and I got bored and decided to re-arrange the files in the drawers.

Hang on you claimed Trump's history was relevant because it didnt include racism. Why is it suddenly irrelevant when it does?

I bring it up because Trump and his supporters do a good job of making good arguments by isolating incidents and breaking those singular incidents down looking for justifications as to why the action isnt racist/sexist/totalitarian. Which works. Place those singular incidents within the larger context of all the other incidents and the picture starts looking much different.

IDK I think that political leanings are going to play a part in this move. We've lived in an uber right wing enclave for 10 years (at least thats been our base of operations) now and honestly we do desire to have some like minded folks to spend time with. Quitting drinking about 6 years ago also plays hugely into that so a locale with a social marijuana scene nearish would be nice.

Oh, in that case pretty much anywhere in King County.  Outside of King County, like the parts outside big cities in CA, it's pretty conservative politically unless it's a college town.

Thats the curse of being me. I want my cake and I want to eat it too, I want the rural life but to have neighbors with a liberal mindset.

IDK what we're gonna do but know we cant handle the heat anymore (saw 120 in multiple places yesterday) so we're getting the hell out of the kitchen.....to .....somewhere..........

I didnt say he didnt have a racist past. I said what we call racism now, wasn't acknowledged as racism in the past.

Well, I suppose it is for those on each side to try to justify, and hopefully what is accepted is somewhere toward the center.

Same in Oregon. Outside the Portland Metro area, and college towns, the rural and small towns are conservative.

In Oregon we vote by mail, so no one even has to know you voted. Selling point??

Even the conservatives here are pretty centrist actually. There are some crazy holy rollers, not like you'd see in the Midwest, or South.

All the cans and cardboard go in a separate trash can. And tipping them over, like a raccoon, makes getting those 10 cent cans easier.

I saw this about Rand Paul.

http://m.cnn.com/2019/07/30/politics/rand-paul-ilhan-omar-send-her-back-somalia-trnd/index.html

Quote

Rand Paul offers to buy Omar a ticket to Somalia so 'she might come back and appreciate America more'

Quote

"And so while I'm not saying we forcibly send her anywhere, I'm willing to contribute to buy her a ticket to go visit Somalia," Paul, who represents Kentucky, said. "And I think she can look and maybe learn a little bit about the disaster that is Somalia — that has no capitalism, has no God-given rights guaranteed in a constitution, and has about seven different tribes that have been fighting each other for the last 40 years."

I had a really bad experience during our short 6 month relocation to  south west Oregon. Place was beautiful but really didnt enjoy the people, more to do with the hard life of meth labs and pot farms than politics though LOL . I imagine I would have had the same problem with the people in just about anywhere THAT isolated.

We've been looking at the Columbia River Valley on both sides of the border for a while now but growing up in AK i was a mountain guy and my wife loved the ocean. I got the mountains here in AZ/NV so im starting to feel like I owe it to her to give her the ocean for a while.

No.  It is natural to be wary.  Growing up in the South, I was steeped in racism.  I am not free of it.  Sometimes it is my first reaction to a situation.  But, I try to look carefully at how people are behaving as.much as how they look  "Those three kids aren't going to cross the street and mug me, they are on their way to play  basketball in the park."   Gut reactions don't always go away but they can be mitigated by thought and experience.

We teach to also trust your instincts. Your subconscious notices patterns and things that are "off" that your conscious mind will try to dismiss. You might need to be wary. Maybe your subconscious mind noted a bulge under a shirt or that they have no basketball or that they are scanning their surroundings more than would be usual. Sometimes we go overboard in an effort to be PC and it puts us at risk.
