Aussie kids caught after 1,000-km road trip

Four children took a stolen four-wheel drive on a 1,000-kilometre (620-mile) road trip across the Australian outback before being nabbed by police, officials said Monday.

A 14-year-old boy, two 13-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl began their epic journey on Saturday when they took cash and packed fishing rods in a vehicle belonging to one of their families in the coastal Queensland town of Rockhampton, police said.

One of the children left a note for his family telling them of his plans.

You'd probably rethink that attitude if it had ended like several similar escapades have in recent times here in Australia, in the deaths of innocent road users. In one recent such incident the 14 year old driver's mother said she had told her son to "keep your head up, you weren't to know someone would be killed". At least we learnt where the problem started there, as many do. At home.

These kids went outback, they were prepared, they knew what they were up to, and they knew how to get it done

They went "outback" ? Not if they travelled from Rockhampton to Grafton. Along roads with significant traffic.

What they did was foolish and dangerous. It's lucky nobody got killed.

And apart from having no driver's licence they do this:

Whatever they hoped to achieve all they've done is land themselves in big trouble.

All part of growing up nowadays, sad to say, hats off to pulling it off and relatively safe without undue or wanton waste of lives, that's the best one can really hope for, again, sad to say...

biggest problem would be if they ran out of gas or broke down somewhere in the middle of nowhere,  they could have died there..  

iirc several  years ago a father and a daughter had their car broke down on them in such area, in Australia, they  only survived cuz they burred themselves to escape hot temps and sun, (heads were on the surface of course)  they were lucky that few days later someone was passing by, they were dehydrated so badly, they almost died

It has happened that people get lost and die on their own property cause it's so big.

Little brats.  So naive of the dangers that could've happened both to themselves or others.  Thankfully, nothing did, but imho they need a swift kick up the butt.
