For 38 years the identity of a woman who was strangled and then tossed into a rural cistern has been a mystery.

She became known as the “Belle in the Well”, and while an autopsy was able to determine her cause of death, it couldn’t tell investigators who she was.

That all changed on Monday morning (local time) when the Ohio county where her body was found in the abandoned water receptacle in 1981 announced they had finally discovered who “Belle” was.
