Buerk: "The obese are weak: let them die"

Well as a disabled person it's a slippery slope. The first people killed by Hitler were "weak" disabled people so they weren't a burden on the country anymore. Obesity has many causes, and some obese people have illnesses and some don't. Skinny people also drop dead of cancer, heart attack, aneurysm, etc. Plenty of people under the obesity bar for weight can still be diagnosed with every disease obese people can. Why not bar people who ran excessively because their rates of skin cancer are higher? It's so too easy to write off a group of people for something others find undesirable or undeserving because soon enough it might be you. Say a country says anyone in a wheelchair is a costly burden and we want to humanely euthanize them. And you aren't disabled, hey you feel great! Who cares if the state says they aren't worth it,I'm not one of them! And the next day you have a stroke..or in this case tomorrow you tear a ligament and while recovering gain weight. Ah well too bad no medical help for you. Nope, he's wrong and a judgemental prick for singling out obese people..

Oh yes, it was pretty bad head-on collision in a car.  My 4 year old was in the backseat in his carseat directly behind me, the 8 year old was at school and we were on our way to surprise my Husband for morning tea at his workplace.  But as we were approaching a blind bend, there was a car that came flying around and I didn't have enough time to react and he slammed directly into the front of us.  The other driver was on the wrong side of the road too and he was trying to crawl away from the accident when a police vehicle arrived.  The other driver had a broken wrist and he was on meth and another assortment of drugs (from what the Police told me months afterwards).

Bystanders had to get my son out of his carseat as the car motor was on fire and I was trapped in the front seat.  Thankfully the mass of cars that stopped behind, someone ran up with a fire extinguisher to put the fire out, but it was a 3 hour process of cutting me out of the vehicle, because the motor was also sitting on top of my feet which snapped my ankles.  My son was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital and thankfully, just received a seatbelt bruise across his chest/tummy.  I remember there was helicopter flying everywhere overhead and it was a rainy day.  I was flown to the Alfred Hospital here in Melbourne (all car accident victims go there I think) and spent 2 weeks in an induced coma in ICU, where they carried out all of my surgeries.  Was finally moved to a Ward for another 3 weeks then was transferred to a wonderful private rehabilitation hospital which is specifically for people recovering from car accidents of any sort, hence, all the classes you can do and all of the specialist doctors are there 24/7 etc.

The other driver is now in gaol.  He was sentenced to 4 years, it was originally 6 years, but because he pled guilty, a third of his sentence is immediately taken off.  He did get out last year and I began to get very scared of driving again, but then we were sent another letter to say that he had violated his terms of parole and he was sent back to prison again (he had 10 page sheet of priors so he was well known to police).  But the whole incident changed our lives dramatically.

Something tells me he will spend his life in and out of prison.

Thats a bad accident, one of the worst I have heard off. My uncle came off his motorbike when a car drove into him at a set of traffic lights. That got him a helicopter ride to the operating theatre and ICU. The NHS messed up one of his operations so he left hospital with one leg 3 inches shorter than the other and ended up having to go private to get it fixed. The police said the driver had caused accidents right across town. They had him checked out at the police station because he was behaving oddly.

It turned out he had had a stroke at the wheel and didnt know what he was doing.

Anyway my uncle now referred to as `Steve Austin, the six million dollar man` who has to endure comments from us such a `we can rebuild him` is a lot better these days. He sold his construction business after the accident and moved off to Spain where he enjoys an early retirement.

Hah that's funny you say that re your uncle being known as Steve Austin!  My boys call me a robot because I'm so full of metal (I think it's titanium?) but I don't beep going through the metal detectors at airports so whatever it is, isn't detectable.

I'm a firm believer in whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.  You just do whatever it takes to get through and try to make the best out of a bad situation.

But yes, I think that fellow will be one of those guys who will always be in trouble with the police as he doesn't seem to care.  When he was brought into the court, he was already in custody for some totally different crime and his mother and ex girlfriend had just finished testifying on the stand what a stand-up guy he is.  Then he was brought in, in handcuffs....stand-up guy indeed.
