A New Jersey house whose current owners were scared off the property by a creepy letter writer known as "The Watcher" has sold for $400,000 less than the owners paid. Derek and Maria Broaddus bought the Westfield home for $1,355,657 in 2014, but they didn't move in after receiving the first of four letters from the anonymous stalker.

I've never heard of this story at all, but I've been absent from these things for a while.  I wonder if it will end up being a neighbour having a bit of a wicked joke with the new owners?

I think it's a fraud because they couldn't afford the place.

Good point actually @Piney I hadn't thought of it that way.

I don't know, Piney, who it is they could be defrauding. They're the ones that lost $400k, no one else. They couldn't afford the place but they could afford to voluntarily walk away? 

PS: maybe I should explain. If you sell your new home for less than the mortgaged amount the bank will not let you sell that home unless you have the cash on hand to make up the difference. In the end, they got hosed... by themselves.

They never paid the whole amount and they just got a book and movie deal.

Oh ok, I thought perhaps they couldn't afford the repayments on the original house loan for the 1.3mil, but they had enough equity in it to take a 400K hit to the mortgage....that's what I thought lol
