Over a dozen people were injured on Sunday, when a large frying pan exploded in the small German town of Alchen-Freudenberg, east of the city of Cologne.

One woman died on Monday from severe burns sustained during the explosion.

Another five people were in life-threatening condition: four from burns and one who suffered a heart attack during the incident, which occurred at a fried potato stand during a traditional food festival.

Never use cheap cooking containers, especially cast iron and glass. Contaminates and flaws will cause them to explode with extreme changes.

If it was raining the water getting into hot oil would not react well either. Just a little water will make hot grease fly. Too much water will explode and cause a fire. The authorities are right about that.

Could it have been something they were cooking with? maybe grease?

Today the police press department reported that the event was caused by a technical malfunction. The pan, which was a tailor made double-walled device, exploded (most likely because of over pressure inside the camber and maybe bad welded seams IMHO). The boost sprayed the hot oil from the pan and the explosive cloud was ignited by the stove`s fire. The pan was in operation for years without failure, police is in contact with the manufacturers to check if there are other devices with the same specification in use somewhere.
