Eldorado Posted September 13, 2019 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2019 "Good news for goths -- black somehow just got even blacker. MIT engineers have cooked up a material that's 10 times blacker than anything else previously reported. "Capturing more than 99.995 percent of any incoming light, the material is made of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown on chlorine-etched aluminium foil. And it was discovered by accident." Full report at EnGagdget: https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/13/mit-scientists-accidentally-create-the-blackest-material-ever/? And at Wired dot com: https://www.wired.com/2009/03/ultrablack/ "The Redemption of Vanity is a 16-carat color diamond covered with a grown “forest” of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs absorb 99.965 percent of light, creating the blackest black material on earth." +Desertrat56 Posted September 13, 2019 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2019 (edited) I read the article. It is interesting and strange that it is being used as an art exhibit. Edited September 13, 2019 by Desertrat56

Timothy Posted September 13, 2019 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2019 It is ‘material of colour’, it is not black. Don’t want to offend the carbon nanotubes! It is cool that it is 10x blacker than Vantablack! And I liked this bit from the Engadget article: ‘and eventually we'll understand all the underlying mechanisms, and will be able to properly engineer the ultimate black.’ Would that technically be called ‘void of colour’ rather than black? If they do hit 100%?
It's Just An Opinion Posted September 13, 2019 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2019 If they do reach 100% black they should try and bounce light around it. Since that's how you make something invisible, so having the surface you're trying to make invisible not be bouncing light back out, would surely help. Once in the 80's a newspaper in Iowa had a headline "The City is in the African-American" because the editor did not read the story just change the word black to african-american. It was about the city finally paying off it's debts.
Seti42 Posted September 14, 2019 #7 Share Posted September 14, 2019 (edited) Hopefully, they'll let ANY artist use it, unlike the makers of Vantablack, who signed an exclusive deal with ONE artist... Edited September 14, 2019 by Seti42

toast Posted September 16, 2019 #12 Share Posted September 16, 2019 BTW, black isnt a color. What we call black is the effect of a surface that absorbs the complete visible spectrum of the electromagnetic spectrum (all of the colors to be exact).
Aye_Yer_Ma Posted September 17, 2019 #13 Share Posted September 17, 2019 It's pretty cool, the name sucks and it ain't as new as people think. They went commercial in 2014 and before that NASA had created something similar but more heat resistant.
