Iraq anti-gov protests leave dead and wounded

Eldorado

"Iraq’s president and the United Nations urged security forces to show restraint on Wednesday after two protesters were killed in clashes with police that other top officials blamed on “infiltrators.”

"Hundreds took to the streets of the capital and cities across the south on Tuesday in the first major challenge to the government, formed a year ago this month.

"Security forces fired tear gas and live rounds to disperse the crowds, leaving two dead and 200 wounded in Baghdad and another protester dead in the south, health officials said."

The protest are spreading and getting worse it seems, the Iraqi government has called a state of emergency, multiple cities are having indefinite curfews put in place, and at least 2 rockets have landed within the green zone in Baghdad, one right outside the Turkish embassy the other at Al-Harithiya bridge.  Also most of Iraq has had its internet service cut except for areas where Kurds are mostly in charge.

The blood continues to spill.

"The protests, in which at least 20 have now been killed and over 600 wounded, began over unemployment and poor services but have escalated into calls for a change of government and pose one of the worst security challenges in years.

"They appear to be independent of any political party and seemingly took the security forces by surprise."

Since internet is out in approximately 75% of Iraq news coming out has been slow to nonexistent beyond the government narrative.  But what has got out are some videos of Iraqi security forces seeming to fire live ammunition into crowds of protesters to disperse them.  Last I heard death count is in the 30s with wounded over 1,500

Reports are now saying over 100 dead and over 4,000 injured.  Snipers have started targeting protesters it seems, the protesters blame the Iraq government and the Iraq government denies using snipers and claims to be looking into who is behind the snipers.  Also protesters have started burning the headquarters of the Dawa and Fadila party and the Bader militias in Dhi Qar.

The protests and the riots are continuing but now Iran is going to send 7,500 troops into Iraq as accusation of the IRGC killing protesters continue to increase.

Very large protest going on throughout Iraq again, so far 30 dead and 2,500 injured on the first day alone.  Some videos of Iran backed militias using rather violent means to suppress the protesters not that the Iraqi police have been gentle themselves.

This is on top of large protests going on in Lebanon along with Turkey and Russia having negotiations on what to do in Syria without Iran being present.  Seems Iran might be starting to lose its grip on the region.

We can hope, but it's a shame the US has also surrendered its influence in the region.

One can hope.  The lack of cash flow may well be at the root of it.

The protesters have burned down a few headquarters of political parties backed by Iran, seems some protesters have captured a few vehicles from iran back PMUs and are parading them, in southern Iraq local tribesmen and Iran backed PMUs have gotten into a few fire fights requiring the Iraq army to step in and keep the two groups separated, and an hour or two ago the Iraqi prime minister has ordered counter terrorism forces to mobilize in Baghdad and to take all neccessary measures to stop the protests.

Some accounts that the protesters in Baghdad have surrounded the parliament building but havent heard much about it yet.

To keep from adding another post just going to throw this at the end but apparently one commander of a powerful Iran backed PMU was apparently kicked to death at one of the protests after he was drug out of an ambulance by protesters and another commander of a separate Iran backed PMU was severely beaten by protesters and I'm not sure if he is still alive or not.

In Karbala Iraqi protesters burnt down the head quarters of Asa'ib Ahl Al-Haq, a rather powerful Iranian backed PMU.

Abu Mahdi Muhandis has said the PMUs, given Muhandis connections and backing by Iran probably meant using Iranian backed PMUs, are ready to end the protests and restore order which caused Sadr to issue a warning against using the PMUs to suppress the protesters.

The protests are still continuing throughout Iraq and all of them still seem to be rather large and have no indication of ending soon.

Destabilising countries is what the west is best at.

More indicators that Trump's sanctions are having an effect on Iran's ability to control their proxies:

Seems to be only a matter of time till another war takes place in Iraq.

Protests are still continuing and growing.  Iraq's only deep water port is still being blocked by protesters costing the Iraqi government billions in dollars.  The Iraqi prime minister promised to stepped down but later back tracked seemingly due to Iranian pressure now saying he will step down once a new acceptable prime minister for the ruling Iraqi coalition has been found.

Recently the ministers of Iraq's government had a meeting believing it was to be lead by the Iraqi prime minister but was instead lead by Soleimani, supposedly the meeting focused on the protests going on in Iraq and if the rumors are true Soleimani essentially said that the Iraqi military and security forces have failed and the only choice now is to dress IRGC members as Iraqi military and have them suppress the protests but that part is still only a rumor so far.

Atleast 2 leaders of powerful Iran backed PMUs have been severly injured or killed by angry protesters.

A few hours ago protesters stormed the Iran consulate in Karbala and set it on fire while fighting the guards, at least 4 protesters were killed.

Lastly al-Sistani, the ayatollah of Iraq, has made vailed threats towards Khamenei about Iran's influence in Iraq and how it is unacceptable for outside forces to have influence within Iraq.  The two have often disagreed and both seem to want to be the head ayatollah of the Shia world.

Actions like this may well lead to an overt invasion by the IRGC, at least on a limited scale.  Iran is not going to easily give up their growing control over Iraq's territory and natural wealth.

Why? If you're a Sunni, do you automatically support Saudi Arabia?

It's that kind of simplistic thinking that leads to people like @and then. Thinking that a broad label is enough to assume guilt and justify war.

It all probably gets back to lousy living conditions which are a partial result of Iran not having the wealth to help ease the problems.  I'm pretty sure that IRANIAN Shias don't much support Iran right now.

Oh absolutely. If the label is broad enough, you can use it to cover ANYTHING :P
