A family of five have been found dead with gunshot wounds in a Massachusetts home in what police have described as a "horrific" tragedy.

The bodies of the two adults and three children were discovered in apartment block in the small town of Abington on Monday morning by a relative who was picking up the children for school.

The family member called 911 after finding one of the adults bleeding on a couch on the first floor.

It does appear as though it was a murder/suicide.

Several loud bangs were heard around 1 AM Monday morning according to a neighbor, Heather McNutley. She said both her and her fiance went to investigate the noise. They noticed the dumpster door was swinging and thought that was where the bangs were coming from.

The family seemed happy and there was never any signs of trouble within the family according to a family friend.

The mother worked at EMI Strategic Marketing in Boston for almost 20 yrs. The father attended the U of Mass Dartmouth. He had referred to himself on his Facebook page as "unemployed and going crazy". He mentioned the children's books he had written and published. Three with the last one published in April 2017.

Police were called around 7:30 AM Monday when a relative went to pick up the children for school and discovered one of the adults bleeding on the couch.
