Iranian oil tanker damaged in Red Sea

Recommended Posts

Last night the Iranian oil tanker Sabiti had 2 explosions occur that damaged 2 oil tanks in the Red Sea 60 miles off the coast from Jeddah.  The Sabiti was carrying a million barrels of oil north to the Suez canal before turning south after the explosions and is currently leaking oil on and off.

Iran is claiming 2 missiles struck the Sabiti on the starboard side.  None of the released pictures have shown any damage, the pictures and been only from the bridge and none released of the struck side, and there has been no released pictures or satellite pictures that show smoke.  Currently the Sabiti is heading south, according to transponder data heading back to the Persian gulf, at approximately 10 knots.  Also being reported there were no injuries from what occured.

This is the third Iranian tanker that has had something occur in the red sea, the other 2 had mechanical failures of which atleast one Iran claimed falsely was caused by an attack, they claimed that one of the tankers was struck by a missile and had its engine room flood when the tanker was never struck, never had its engine room flood, and just had engine failure.

Given the pure size and design of modern oil tankers they do tend to just shrug off anti-ship missiles and naval mines, during the tanker war in the 80's multiple tankers got struck with multiple anti-ship missiles and/or naval mines and continued on like nothing happened.

Given current conditions in the middle east and Iran already saying it was a missile strike coming from the east, indirectly blaming Saudi Arabia, it seems highly likely there will be some kind of escalation.

It seems there is some confusion coming out of Iran over what happened.  Official Iranian news sources are reporting it as an attack on an Iranian oil tanker while the Iranian National Oil Company is denying that any attack took place and that what occured was just some kind of accident.

As for the leaking oil it seems that it has been minimal to none, its possible the initial reports of it leaking oil were wrong, as no pictures of a large oil spill have been shown yet.
