NASA unveils future Moon spacesuits that should be ready by 2024

Today, NASA unveiled its designs for future spacesuits that astronauts will wear during trips to the lunar surface. The suits are still in development, but NASA claims they’ll be ready to keep astronauts alive in space by 2024 — the space agency’s deadline to return humans to the Moon.

Known as the xEMU, this next generation spacesuit builds on the design of suits already worn by astronauts on the International Space Station. These new ensembles are upgraded so that astronauts wearing them can live and work on the Moon. During a demonstration at NASA headquarters on Tuesday, a spacesuit engineer showed off the flexibility of the suit, proving it can twist and bend at the waist, unlike suits of the past. The suit’s legs are also pliable, allowing wearers to walk on another world — a capability astronauts don’t currently need in Earth orbit.

It's not a fashion show, they're designed to be 100% functional in a hostile environment and actually fit multiple body types.

Good--but they're still ugly. They called life jackets "May Wests" for obvious reasons. You could call these things "Rosy O'Donnell's".

Climate change fanatics seem to meet their projection dates more than NASA does. Idunno guys - as time goes on, I'm beginning to suspect more and more that NASA is a big money laundering operation. They eat a lot of cash with little to show for it other than more click-bait.

NASA is a development bottomless money pit...They are doing very interesting research but to build an develop new launcher, it's more like a nightmare. They are the biggest reason why private launch companies are soaring now !

Agreed. The research they are (supposedly,) doing sounds fascinating. I wonder how much of it will lead to real world applications? Despite millions and millions of dollars over several decades, not much has changed on the shuttle design. To my ignoramus eyes, it looks and acts very much like it did in the 70's. Given that technology has advanced ten fold since then, I thought we would be on a completely new design by now with a completely different propulsion system. Every year, we read promising articles about new fusion reactors and hydrogen reactors and all kinds of Sci-Fi tech that is sure to take man beyond the stars. Maybe NASA suffers from the same mis-management as other Government agencies, maybe it's just "Big Oil" keeping us down. Who knows.
