Man charging farmers $50k to make it rain

Recommended Posts

A controversial inventor accused of “preying” on vulnerable farmers by promising to make it rain has insisted “there’s no way we want to con anyone”.

David Miles from Miles Research has been peddling weather modification technology for nearly two decades, previously under the name Aquiess, which the Victorian Government highly criticised in 2006.

Mr Miles is currently offering three-month rain contracts to farmers in Victoria’s grain belt for $50,000 on a “success basis”. The competition regulator has warned against doing business with him, but says it is powerless to stop him.

For 50k the farmers should just switch over to planting cannabis, a low hydration crop

Yup, the threat of a Dakota Access leak made everybody sell all their cattle and switch to "no irrigation" crops, then the trade war with China killed them.

Trump was sooo good for the High Plains agricultural community. <_<

OK so am I the only one picturing this guy just gathering all of their dollar bills and throwing them into the air or was that intentional?

Sounds like it might be just as useful honestly.. If you can deliver rain instantly then why 1) give yourself 6 months to deliver and 2) are you not a supervillain using your powers for evil?

“They signed the agreement that if by the end of June they’d received 100mm, they pay $50,000, if they only receive 50mm, they would only pay $25,000. Anything under half we don’t want to be paid,” he said.

The farmers around here usually plant soybeans as their primary crop.  I've noticed a little more cotton this year but not much.

Scientists have been able to make it rain for a while now, it's nothing new they use cloud seeding and other various methods.

Very true, not sure this is the same as that though..

It was in the late 1990’s that [Miles] realized that it was possible to incrementally influence weather patterns using a variant of the Einstein - Rosen Bridge hypothesized in the 1930's, to effectively create a bridge between ‘the present’ in the physical space-time continuum, and a near-future event, forecast to exist from one to ten days ahead in time. The necessary targeting profile of the predicted event is created using meteorological forecast data and high-resolution supercomputing.

Quote

The company also referenced something called “electromagnetic scalar waves” on its website, but took down the language after ABC Radio contacted University of Melbourne associate professor of physics Martin Sevior, who told them “electromagnetic scalar waves don’t exist. There’s no such thing. He’s taken a few words and put them together and made them sound somewhat scientific but it’s meaningless.”

Edit: in fact I couldn't directly validate that top quote so I thought I'd check their official site, it looks like they've reworded it to sound a little more technical and less sci fi.. and somehow it reads even worse:

Quote

A platform which, using sophisticated data assimilation, can generate a “live link” or “bridge” between a Model of Near-Future Weather, and the actual Real-World Incoming Weather. The Miles Research claim is that upon configuring such a ‘space-time bridge,’ vector adjustments may then be ‘imprinted’ (in one direction), into the remote corridor via the linked (or paired) model-to-atmosphere system.

Edit 2: I missed that some of this info was actually summarised in the article linked in the OP, but more sources and details never hurt..

So he has a time machine?

Only to an extent

Cloud seeding is believed to increase the likelihood of moisture bearing clouds precipitating over a given area, but there is no way to create moisture laden clouds in the first place.   If you have dry air aloft then it won't rain whatever you do.  And if you do make it rain, 99 times out of 100 it would probably have rained anyway (but maybe just not quite as much).

Cloud seeding is a thing... some pay big bucks for it !
