Germany's "new Hitler" is on the rise

"“There is nothing wrong with expressing our democratic opinion. We want Germany to remain German,” he tells his supporters, to ecstatic cheers.

"Mr Höcke is the most controversial figure in German politics. He is under observation by the country’s intelligence services as a possible threat to the democratic order. His opponents say he is a Nazi, and German television has compared him to Hitler.

"But to his supporters he is a hero. They have waited hours for him in the cold, windswept square of this small east German town, part of the ancestral home of the British Royal Family, and his bodyguards have to hold them back as they queue to take selfies with him."

Full monty at the UK Telegraph: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/27/germanys-new-hitler-poised-lead-afd-regional-election-gains/

And at the NY Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/26/world/europe/afd-election-east-germany-hoecke.html

Now you now I don't like to to trivialize at all, but some of the things they say he says are pure Trumpisms. “Maybe one day I will be an interesting political figure in this country”. (say with appropriate air of menace)

Eldorado I'm afraid I'm going to have to object to your blatant partisan use of left wing fake News sources and insist that you include an article from that bastion of unquestionable Impartiality Fox Fake News that describes Mr. Bejoern "Heil" Hocke as the Next Ronald Reagan. ;) Thanks for all the great articles :tu:

and then

Wait... so he's thought to be the second coming of evil incarnate because he objects to the mass influx of a population that will decimate traditional German culture?  Am I summing this up correctly?  THIS is his crime?  If he is attempting to incite widespread violence then I'd agree but that doesn't seem to be his goal.

Of course you are wrong about this guy. The/a general discussion about immigration is common in democratic political circles and it should so because there is pro and there is contra at least. The guy is a wolf in the sheep and a fascist. His kind of language is of propagandistic nature in a Goebbels`s fashion and he is pushing the very same buttons in the minds of stupid people like Hitler/Geobbels did. He is such far right that even the head of the AFD tried to kick him out of the party last year. Just to give you an idea how rotten this guy is. Maybe you know about the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. In 2017 Höcke stated about the memorial (quote): "We Germans, our people, are the only people in the world who have planted a monument of shame in the heart of their capital."

I thought Hitler was far-left?  i.e. more power to the government with state-run nationalised services with censorship and propaganda dominating the media.  Isn't that what the far-left is supposed to lean towards?  i.e. Always Saluting Progress = Onwards and upwards (bellamy nazi salute).  How can they criticize Hitler when they clearly have a mutual interest in the same policies.  Surely Hitler must be an inspirational figure in the far-left?

Far-left = socialism (big government)

Far-right = capitalism (small government)

You could have broken that a bit more gently, you've ruined the image of all Germans going around slapping their thighs and ankles, i thought Bavaria was in Germany.

these "heros" do not come from vacuum, current politics make their rise necessary, just like it was with hitler.  simple action\reaction concept.

Don't underestimate the man. That little Austrian Corporal with the ridiculous Charlie Chaplin mustache, marching to the Feldherrnhalle with his bully boys in 1923, cut a ridiculous figure, too. Then, ten years and one book later......

Don't know about "necessary", but little doubt circumstances propel people into positions they otherwise would not get to.

Why would you want Sauerkraut in your pants? Sauerkraut doesn't mean Sausage it a vegetable, so you have a vegetable pants, to each their own, but useful phrase I don't think so..

So you say there was a need for Hitler`s "concept" because it was "necessary"? Is that your general understanding of politics?

senior members of Mrs Merkel’s government have accused Mr Höcke of personally whipping up an atmosphere of anti-Semitism that led to the attack — charges he denies.

That doesn't worry you? That's usually enough, even if there may be no serious grounds to it whatsoever, to instantly cast anyone that such an allegation is thrown at into the outer darkness of isolation from humanity.

Is there any firm ground for accusations of anti-Semitism towards this character? Has he been quoted as saying any such thing publicly? That's essentially the acid test of Nazism, surely.

Probably not, but then these days it is common practice to call anyone a Nazi if they don't agree with your agenda. Apparently in some circles Boris is also a Nazi. This is a non-story.
