Bloodhound car ramps up its speed to 628 mph

The Bloodhound vehicle has become the third fastest British car of all time - unofficially.

The arrow-shaped racer clocked a speed of 461mph (741km/h) as it powered across a dried-out lakebed in southern Africa's Kalahari desert on Friday.

This mark tops the 403mph (648km/h) recorded by Donald Campbell in his Bluebird CN7 car in 1964.

The only British cars to have gone faster are Thrust2 and Thrust SSC which both got well above 600mph (965km/h).

Thrust SSC still holds the absolute land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h) set in 1997.

The driver on that occasion was RAF pilot Andy Green. The Wing Commander is at the controls again in Bloodhound.

Bloodhound is now a 500mph car. The British-built straight-line racer recorded its highest speed yet during a hot afternoon run across the Kalahari Desert on Wednesday.

GPS instruments in the vehicle clocked 501mph (806km/h).

Bloodhound's driver, Andy Green, declared himself "chuffed to bits" after bringing the car to a stop.

His team is now increasingly confident it has the means to break the land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h).

The UK-led bid to break the world land speed record is under threat once more.

Ian Warhurst, who owns the Bloodhound car that's been built to go beyond 800mph (1,290km/h), says new money must come into the project this month or it will be wound up.

Bloodhound clocked 628mph (1,010km/h) in trials last year while powered only by a jet engine.

With the addition of a rocket, the vehicle should easily beat the existing world record of 763mph (1,228km/h).

That won't happen, though, says the Yorkshire businessman, unless the financing is there to support it.

The Bloodhound supersonic car that was built to break the land speed record is up for sale.

Current owner Ian Warhurst says he's de-risked the project by running the vehicle above 600mph, but it's now time for someone else to take on the effort.

Bloodhound became one of the fastest cars in history during trials in the Kalahari desert in 2019.

But it needs the addition of a rocket motor to break the all-time record speed of 763mph (1,228km/h).

Yorkshireman Warhurst has calculated the cost of achieving this to be £8m.

"I've gone as far as I can with it," he told BBC News. "I can't put any more of my own money into the project, so it's time for me to pass the baton to someone else to complete the job. And I'll be cheering from the sidelines."
