An investigation has revealed the fate of a holidaymaker who recently went missing off the island of Reunion.

"Hotspot for shark attacks"....."Large swathes of beach closed"...........Looks like a Darwin Award to me.

The picture accompanying the article is a sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus), not a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) as it is labelled. Sand tigers are relatively harmless and have never been responsible for a fatal attack on a human.

Well, I learnt something a "sand tiger shark" is what we call a "grey nurse", and yes, they are not regarded as a risk to swimmers.

Sand tiger is the American term and grey nurse is the Australian, if I'm not mistaken.

Perhaps that shark liked a drop of scotch.

Some amazing things have been found in the stomach contents of tiger sharks. One story had a drum of some kind. Another bizarre story was of a shark that was caught, disgorging a man's arm, that had a distinctive tattoo. It was identified as belonging to a criminal who had gone missing, presumably murdered and dumped at sea.
