Orangutan with human rights to begin new life

An orangutan which spent 20 years in an Argentine zoo is being moved to a US animal sanctuary after being granted the same legal rights as humans.

Lawyers won a landmark appeal for Sandra in 2014, arguing she was being detained in Buenos Aires illegally.

The ruling found her to be Argentina's first "nonhuman person, with the right to liberty".

The 33-year-old arrived in Kansas on Friday and will undergo tests before moving to her new home in Florida.

Thought some of you might enjoy this very nice story out of Florida

Orangutan granted legal person hood moves to Florida

An orangutan granted legal person hood by a judge in Argentina is now hanging in Florida. Sandra, who is 33, was born in Germany and spent 25 years at the at the Buenos Aires Zoo before arriving at the Center for Great Apes in the Sunshine State on Tuesday. “She was shy when she first arrived, but once she saw the swings, toys and grassy areas in her new home, she went out to explore,” center director Patti Ragan told The Associated Press. “She has met her caregivers here and is adjusting well to the new climate, environment, and the other great apes at the center. This is the first time in over a decade that Sandra has had the opportunity to meet other orangutans, and she will meet them when she chooses. It is a new freedom for her, and one we are grateful to provide.”

Awwwww! And I thought it was a different Orange critter!

I am so sadly happy that she found a happy home!

Did anyone know that of chimps, humans, and orangutans, chimps are the most promiscuous, and orangutans are the most monogamous? Leaving the "superior" humans squarely in the middle?  :D

Florida is TWO different states now.  The Panhandle is Red and the rest of the state is dark blue.  The influx from New York is destroying a good state.

Well if you know orangutans, you'd know this already, and you certainly wouldn't argue with it.
