Berkeley lecturer slams rural Americans

Let's look at the real reason for this academics comment.

Rural Americans are typically not liberal. Which makes them subhuman to people like him.

The loss of humanity people have towards those who disagree is sad.

A trust fund baby who's been finely educated but knows nothing.  He'll do well in the current zeitgeist.

It would depend on how such a mega city is constructed. If it's basically a self contained unit, perhaps rooftop gardens and small livestock, then maybe. But cramming that amount of people in such a space would invite untold chaos.

Living in a teeming mass might not be good for our psyche or mental stability.  Efficiency is not everything.  Sacrificing everything for efficiency seems so dehumanizing.  It may not promote human intelligence to have  a single set of clothes, live in a box and get meals from a dispenser if that is his idea of intelligence.

Here is the other thing I wasn't sure about when I read that:  Was he so opposed to what he thinks is subsidizing rural life  that he was raging about it because he viewed it as socialism?

I don't think so. I got the distinct impression he thinks rural people are so stupid and redneck they deserve anything they bring on themselves living that lifestyle.

The funny thing about it is we live in a suburb with a lot of young hipsters moving in. They want all the benefits of raising goats, chickens or pygmy pigs for the fresh milk and eggs technically in the city limits. I don't know why they want the pigs. They complain when they can't get the laws changed to allow livestock. They don't have big enough lots, for city regulations, to avoid conflicts with the neighbors. They think they are being treated unfairly.

Others move into brand new neighborhoods, out in the country, and complain about second and third generation cow, pig and chicken farms then complain about the smell.

It's like getting married and expecting to be able to change your spouse. Yeah, like that ever works. :P

Apparently he thinks that all rural folk were born in the city and emigrated to the sticks, hence "the life they chose".  What about the millions who were born there?  I'm city born and bred and as soon as I was unfettered from the daily grind and need to commute I moved to the country.  I'm in a little village about 50 miles from my hometown and I couldn't be happier.  When I hear about killings and other crimes I can guess which of 5 neighborhoods they occurred in, because they've been in the news most of my life.  The burbs where I grew up are falling victim to the ever expanding ghetto and year by year once peaceful neighborhoods are added to the list.  Far from being uneducated rubes, it's the smart ones who leave that life for the bucolic tranquility of the country.  Given other choices, who would choose to remain in a crime ridden, crowded, over taxed, vegetation deprived, rat infested urban cesspool?  If that's what you choose when you graduate from Harvard I'll stay blissfully ignorant.

Michelle Obama laments "white flight" and they buy a house in Martha's Vineyard...right on the coast that is supposed to be underwater in a few years.

In every disaster movie I've ever seen people trying to survive never run into the cities. Just thought I'd say that.

I didn't see any acknowledgement or concern over what makes whites flee.  People don't run from nothing.

My husband and I live in what used to be his grandparent's house. When his grandmother had to move into a nursing home, he bought the house for practically nothing, market value, to help pay for her care The area, once being very prestigious, had become gang and drug infested. There were still a lot of feisty elderly people who refused to allow that to happen in the few blocks we live in. The idea caught on with younger families wanting to restore these big old houses to original that had been turned into multiple apartments by slum lords.

In 1991 the area was officially designated an historic neighborhood. It is now one of the most valuable properties just outside of the city.

There were a lot of hard years but we all pulled together.

Congratulations to you for turning retreat into Charge!  The property values are your reward.  In many places though, whites are fleeing a tide that can't be reversed, yet Mrs. Obama blames them rather than admitting to the real reason.

The trend to leave the cities and move to the suburbs began in the 70's. I didn't realize Mrs. Obama missed anyone. The cities are now overgrowing the old boundaries. I think the trend will be to continue moving out further into the surrounding areas.

Very much the opposite.  Farming is the most primary essential service we have, no food no one lives.  There is a pyramid but it is grounded in rural America.

You mean he views urban life as socialism, and therefore a desirable state for humanity?

Once one of the loveliest cities in the country speeds up the pace toward self destruction.  Liberalism IS a disease of the mind, apparently.  It's as if any rule or regulation that was put in place for a civilized life has undergone an open assault.  I wonder if the multimillion dollar properties have a urine smell nearby?  Somehow, I doubt it but the Plebes are expected to just deal and shut up.  It will be instructive to see where the city "fathers" draw a line.

An educated moron.  I would like to see the city dwellers feed themselves without the country people.  They would be killing each other for food within a month.

A harsh suggestion, but worthy of testing out, methinks ? :P

Well what I got from his quotes is that he thinks urban dwellers subsidize and pay for the extra costs incurred by the rural dwellers.  And he doesn't like that.  I am not sure if he is just ranting a personal philosophy that he made up without any need for facts.  think he is more boogerwacky that liberal or conservative.

Dang this dude is a winner. Not only did he do work for Chavez he was born into radical progressive royalty.

Boudin’s story is even more movie-worthy. His parents were left-wing radicals in the Weather Underground and served as getaway drivers in an October 1981 robbery that wound up killing three people. Boudin, 14 months old at the time of the incident, was adopted by Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, also Weather Underground radicals. He graduated from Yale and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes scholar.

I was trying not to say it but I can't help it. This guy's political roots are just so familiar. Him and Obama are cut from the same cloth.

That's what he claims it to be about, yes.

I imagine this Berkeley professor wants universal healthcare, universal ("free") college, more subsidized housing, food stamps, etc.

He obivously does not actually care about subsidies and people "paying for their bad choices".

He hates how rural people vote.

If he really cared that much about subsidies and other people subsidizing things, then he wouldn't just care about rural area healthcare subsidizes and not care about all the other ones.
