If the school didn't have metal detectors and guards the school board should be criminally charged.  ENOUGH of this.

The news just said the suspect is an Asian male and he is contained. They must know where he is and they have him surrounded.

They just said one of the students, a female, has died. Two males are in critical condition. They also said they heard the suspect had killed himself but that is not what the sheriff is saying.

Authorities are giving a press conference. The shooter is a 16 yr old Asian male and a student at the school. He is in the hospital in grave condition. The suspect was found in the quad with the other victims. They just said he shot himself in the head. Today is his birthday.

They just said another 14 yr old male victim has passed away

They said there were 6 struck by gunfire including the suspect.

Police confirmed the suspect shot himself in the head and is in grave condition. He used a .45 semi-automatic pistol.

Whoever he got the gun from should be charged with murder and attempted murder.

Why? Do we charge car dealers when it’s vehicular manslaughter? Do we charge fertiliser retailers when it’s a bomb? Charge the shooter with murder, and if they got the gun because of lax gun security charge the gun owner with that because that’s their only crime here, unless they brought the gun for him knowing he was going to do this.

What if he stole the gun?  Or, if it happened in a state where he could legally purchase, what then?  I don't plan to engage in the same old arguments because it really is like having people yelling at each other without listening and it does no good.

The reality is that wherever the weapon was procured, the teen chose to use it and with our current state of risk in the country regarding these events I think schools, especially, have an obligation to protect against these kinds of crimes.

Guns are legal to own and are not going away no matter how many people hate the idea of them so adults need to come together and act to physically protect people who are basically forced to attend what amounts to free-fire kill zones.  No other situation is equivalent to what is happening in schools.  These students have no choice but to go or be held accountable by government at some level so government should do the best possible to make them safe.

If a school board anywhere in America pushed for a tax to harden schools I seriously doubt it would be met with significant opposition.

In most states where guns are available without all the hysterics, sometimes even when children are accidentally killed in the home due to the carelessness of parents no charges are filed.  I'm of two minds about that but that's the way it is.  The thinking is that prison cannot possibly do more to punish that person than their own conscience will.  Less lenience is available if the dead child ISN'T theirs, however.

The Left are focused on removing anything that can "hurt" them and with the list of fears they have that is a LOT of outlawing they want to do.  The case that SCOTUS just voted for is an example of how the mindset is beginning to pervade our country.  We are all "victims" who have no responsibility when things happen to us so we must make someone PAY.

If the firearm manufacturer -Remington, this time - is hit with a billion in fines or payouts then they'll probably shutter their plants and maybe even move offshore.  Far worse than the lost jobs and tax base for that community will be the precedent that will then help to chip away at 2A throughout the nation.  No one will want to produce any product that might be used to cause death or injury because THEY may well be found responsible for the improper use of said product.  This world is being taken over by vicious children who think they are adults.

The irony I see is exasperating because the same political movement that pushes endlessly for more personal freedom and less strict laws for personal choices also want to give the government the power to be armed nannies to protect them.  If they want that for themselves then I have no problem with it.  When they want it to cover ME as well, I have a very big problem with it.

I heard that the father owned guns but he passed away a couple of years ago. Don't know if the mother kept his guns in the house after he died or how the 16 yr old may have gotten a hold of one of them.

News sites are now reporting that a third student has died but all their headlines still say two. This must have just happened.

Edit: These headlines are wrong. This is from the original link here in post #2.

About two hours later, authorities said to media that a third victim had died. However, they later clarified that was not the case, adding that all surviving victims were in stable condition.

Detectives found more weapons at the suspect's home.

https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/saugus-high-school-shooter-gun-own-parents-home-564957432.html

Detectives served a search warrant with the help of SWAT teams and bomb squads at the home of Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow, close to Saugus High School where the shooting took place, in the hours after the attack.

According to court records, the 16-year-old's mother and father took a dispute to court in 2016 over who should have custody of the teen.

Around the same time, several law enforcement sources have told NBC4 that deputies from the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station detained the teenager’s father on an involuntary hold for a mental health evaluation.

As a result of that, deputies seized a number of firearms from the home. Those guns were eventually destroyed by the County.

After that event, sources say the father would have been considered a prohibited purchaser, or someone who could not legally purchase a gun in California.

The father died of natural causes in December 2017.

The question remains over how the weapons in the home were obtained, considering some guns in the home were already confiscated in years past, and the teen gunman was too young to purchase them on his own.

Classmates and neighbors are expressing surprise over who the suspected shooter is.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/11/14/santa-clarita-shooting-suspect-described-quiet-regular-boy/4196908002/

Neighbors and classmates described the boy as pleasant but noted that he was changed by the death of his father two years ago. Classmates have identified the boy to USA TODAY, although law enforcement has yet to name him.

“He doesn’t seem like the kind of kid to do this,” said Brooke Risley, a 16-year-old junior at Saugus High School

Risley said he was a quiet, normal student with whom she had attended the same schools since elementary. He ran track and cross country while his girlfriend, with whom sheriff’s deputies say they are in contact, was on the swim team. He was also a Boy Scout.

This article says there was nothing found at the house and gives a good interview with one of the boy's neighbors who is a RN.

This article says there were other weapons confiscated. Police are investigating the student's Instagram account as there was activity in it after the shooting, indicating someone else has access to it.

Different school, same discussion.  Are we any closer to finding a solution?

What made this young man wake up today on his 16th birthday and decide to do something like this? Can we answer that question? Background checks, though I agree with them, would not have stopped this. This teen was far too young to legally purchase or possess a handgun.

Yes maybe he will be able to say.  It may be different for different people, but if he if he can give an answer, we might get closer.

A .45, if that's actually what he used, is a very nasty piece of work that causes tremendous damage.  I say "if" because we were told that he shot himself in the head with it and survived.  The odds of that being true have to be so small as to be impossible.

More tragic deaths, and again the Local, State and Fedral Authorities will talk a big game and in the end do Nothing. I agree with andthen, schools that don't have the proper security for their students should in some way be held accountable. However, in some cases I suspect it's funding that has stopped this from happening.

Given what I have said above I also blame the Federal Government. This could be easily mandated through legislature and funded by the Government. Our children should not suffer because of the politics in this issue, there is absolutely no excuse for Governments inaction.

Maybe this time Washington DC will finally get off their collective asses and become part of the solution instead of turning a blind eye to this issue. During the up coming election all these mass shootings are going to become a hot button issue, on that you can bet.
