I read somewhere that there is a claim that flat-earth is a specific 'disinfo psyop'. The idea is, you take an idea that is so completely silly, despite overwhelming evidence, then go 'this is wrong'. You encourage said idea and people will latch onto it because the idea of it being so silly makes it more believable. Like, simply by denying it, it gains credibility. But why, you ask? The claim is that you make 'flat-earth' a thing that you can chuck any other conspiracy into the bag and 'taint' it. Aliens are real? You're just as crazy as flat-earthers! Government has blacksites around the world? You're just as crazy as the flat-earthers. Government has lists of people to remove in the event of national emergencies? You're just as crazy as the flat-earthers. In short a single apple spoils the lot. The claim is that a huge % of the original flat-earthers were paid for by 'agencies' and encouraged by members of the 'agencies' until it takes up a life of its own, no matter how small.

Possible? Sure. Probable? Who knows. Others have cited a psychological reason why people do this, they do it in order to 'raise themselves up' above others by claiming to have hidden knowledge and not being part of the 'herd' and this is a simple thing. You can't kill an idea and it exists now, so won't go away. The internet makes ideas all the more easy to spread. I'm not sure what the solution is. Unless you send them up in a rocket to space to see it first hand (and even then I suspect many will say 'you drugged me and put me in a VR suite'). Who knows.

Ancient Greeks posited the world was 'round', though proving it beyond doubt was beyond them. Such is life.

As the article in the OP's link shows many of the people who truly believes in the flat Earth does so for religious reasons. No need for a grand conspiracy there.

As a wise man once said "Not everything is a conspiracy"

Maybe they should take a telescope to the top of one of the worlds tallest mountains, like mount Everest. (28,200' feet) If the world truly is flat, then at the highest point on the earth with a telescope they should be able to locate most every city on this flat planet. (But, insert an excuse here as to why that isn't possible)

Never underestimate the power of confirmation bias.

It's a good idea to get the willfully ignorant all together in one building.
Makes it easier to blow them up.

Someone mentioned Columbus but I think all sailors knew the world was round. Think about it, when you see a ship on the horizon it doesn't poof into existence. You see the very top of the mast first, then more and more until the ship is revealed.

It's the same concept as someone holding a flag walking up a hill. Someone on the other side of the hill will see the flag first before they see the person because of the curve of the hill.

oh my God nobody sees the potential benefit of having so many flat-earth believers. If I would be a rich person or someone who can waste a few thousand dollars I will make a business that is meant to demonstrate Flat Earth Believers that the Earth is not flat.

Can be done either through flying or boat trips or any other exercise  demonstrating this fact.

There's a documentary made by "flat earthers". They prove the earth is round by trying to prove it's flat. Like my ex wife, when a narcissist has an idea, you can't convince them of anything else. Just shake your head and move on.

So people make up asinine claims to explain away other asinine claims.

If the government is paying them it's welfare checks.

I've seen a lot of flat earth videos on YouTube. They also believe Australia doesn't exist, and that the sun and moon are much smaller and closer than scientists say they are.

Surely the fact day/night slowly traverses the globe at different times as we spin on oor axis is enough.

I'm usually open to folk having their own beliefs but this is denial of the stupidest kind. Some of these people hold important jobs in society. Jeezus.

It would have made no sense for Colombus (the English and Latin form of his name, Colon is the Spanish form) wanting to sail west to reach China or India if he thought the world was flat!

I think that's even wronger than the usual "everyone else believed in a flat earth but CC thought it was a globe".

It doesn't have to be governments anymore. Cambridge Analytica has shown us the power of misdirected attention. Corporations have taken notice.

This may be why Youtube is removing flat earth channels and videos. The die hard flat earthers will take that as confirmation that FE is real and therefore Youtube is censoring it to hide the truth. Some of the FE front men have already cited Youtube's bans when arguing for flat earth.

Spoiler

There could be a deep state element behind this. *adjusts tinfoil hat*

Like you said, misdirection is a powerful tool. Buckle in cause we're going deep in crazy:

Decades ago, a group appears on the scene called "the flat earth society". Thing is, real flat earthers (don't laugh,) think that group is controlled opposition

President Obama referenced "the flat earth society" in multiple speeches. He didn't say "flat earthers", or "flat earth believers" but specifically "the flat earth society".

If "flat earth" was/is being used as a psyop, writing references to a shill organization in to Presidential speeches is a powerful way to get people looking in that direction. Whenever you can get large swaths of people focused on something trivial ("storm Area 51!"), it means they aren't looking at you. "Flat bread and circuses".

Flat-earthers are pushing peoples' buttons - that in itself makes it a 'thing'. See how many comments this article generated. No-body believes the earth is flat - they just love the attention. Claiming to believe in crazy things is attractive to people who enjoy the outrage it generates.

There's certainly a "counter-culture" component to it.

I am not surprised that the numbers of flat-earthers is growing. People are getting stupider at an ever-increasing rate. These people wallow in ignorance and are the ones that believe every stupid e-mail scam that comes their way. they don't bother me at all. I just look at them like I would a 30-year old that still believes in Santa Claus. Their gene pool is so shallow that unless they have totally flat feet they can't get their arches wet.
