That's a really interesting article, actually.  I might try a get a look at the report, but my driveby comments would be this:

Here, downunder in Straya, we specialise in apathy .. er.. bein' laid back.

We are, however, good at spotting d********s, pretenders, racists and bigots from looong distances.

Add those together and it's no wonder the far right hasn't got a foothold (yet:unsure: ), and that we are not like the divided angry messes in .. some places..

Keep up the good work, cobbers!

Added:  I noted this with some concern:

Far right groups had attempted to market themselves as fitness groups and to branch stack the NSW Young Nationals as means to recruit members and increase their political power.

Any members of the NSW 'Young Nationals" here, wishing to comment?

...in my view, it is equally erroneous to hold that the common four-letter words are necessarily indecent in every context...and hold to that they can never be indecent at all. -  Bray CJ, Romeyko v Samuels (1972) 2 SASR 529 (FC).

It's an annoyance that Hilaly and Anning became pariahs for the wrong reasons - despite it being a reasonable outcome.

I don't know that we're good at spotting 'em.  It's just dumb luck.

From the discussion paper...

Quote

There is a wealth of evidence showing a worrying decline in the level of public trust. In 2007, 86 per cent of Australians were satisfied with how democracy works in Australia. That figure is now 41 per cent. Just 31 per cent of Australians say they trust the federal government, and the approval rating for politicians is at 21 per cent.1 Evidence also suggests that those with the lowest incomes are least satisfied with democracy.2

Excuse my appeal to common sense but my guess is that these figures coincide with the last time the Australian Government carried a surplus; but, we've also had six changes of PM in the same period. Labor couldn't win with policy of nation building; and, I can't see the minor parties, with no track record, increasing public confidence.

Most Australian politicians, or people active on the political spectrum in general, couldn’t organise a root in a brothel with an Aldi bag full of $100s.
