Humans fooled by hyper-realistic masks, study

Some masks are so realistic that people frequently cannot tell them apart from human faces, a study has found.

Participants were fooled by the masks in a fifth of cases, researchers from the Universities of York and Kyoto found.

So-called “hyper-realistic” silicone masks are designed to imitate real human faces, leaving no freckle, wrinkle or wisp of hair unaccounted for.

The researchers believe the devices, which cost around £1,000, will only become more convincing and could be exploited by criminals as a disguise.

There have already been a lot of crime shows and movies where the criminals use these masks.  I think the masks have been around for quite a while.

"Hyper-realistic masks are made from flexible materials such as silicone and are designed to imitate real human faces – down to every last freckle, wrinkle and strand of real human hair.

"In a study by the Universities of York and Kyoto, researchers asked participants to look at pairs of photographs and decide which showed a normal face and which showed a person wearing a mask.

"Surprisingly, participants made the wrong call in one-in-five cases."

Good enough to fool security camera and probably video recognition software. But face to face...that's a lot harder.

This has got to be a joke, right? Please tell me if any of you would have actually been fooled by this mask in a second.
