Many people were poorer in the past because one income did not provide.

Take into account families would live together and the children brought up within the family 'business' or to work on the land.

Then we have the BIGGY equality for women. Women in the western world over the years have taken to going to work as opposed to staying home breeding and cleaning.

The world has made progress,  not making progress is  having lots of children when you can not afford them and letting the tax payers fund you or breeding in the hope they will survive,  this still.happens in some Aftican areas,  that and lack of education and birth control.

We live a lot differently than the old days. We have towns,  societies,  better education and technogy.

Women are just as capable at being an engineer as the next man.

the other side is that we live in a culture of ''material needs''. Society establish a living standard that you need to follow to be a true citizen and not seen as a below par citizen. To be able to stay in this living standard, pushed hard by the omnipresent media in our life, both parents need to work and cannot afford to have more children.

Maybe I'm being a bit dyslexic here, but shouldn't the title be "Wheel of Time"?

Not nitpicking.

Like John said. "material needs". Everyone wants a pile of toys and fancy vacations now.

When I was a single father my son didn't want or need a lot, so I worked one job (while going to college).
