Russian firm tried to hack Ohio voting

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio detected and thwarted an election-related cyber attack this month, the state's elections chief said.

Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose said the “relatively unsophisticated” hacking attempt on Nov. 5, which was Election Day, originated in Panama but was traced to a Russian-owned company.

LaRose told the Columbus Dispatch on Tuesday that the would-be attackers were looking for vulnerabilities in his office's website.

“They are poking around for soft spots,” LaRose said.

LaRose said Ohio's election results are safe because neither the election machines nor the ballot counters the state uses are connected to the internet.

He said the attempted attack sought to insert malicious code into his office's website. It was detected by the state's Albert network security system, a sort of digital burglar alarm.

“The good guys won that day and the bad guys lost,” he said.

It's worth reminding people that the GOP have done nothing to address election security after 2016. In fact, Moscow Mitch has blocked any action at all, instead opting to do almost nothing but confirm unqualified, partisan hacks to the courts.

Your entire government agrees that Russians interfered in numerous ways and the GOP are like, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dear lord, whoever makes up these stories never know when to let go of a dead horse do they. You've tried this one. It ended in ignominy. Can't you think of anything else?

So either the Nefarious Russians are completely ignorant of the way it works or the story is all a complete load of a*se.

That the Russians continually attempt to hack US elections is an established fact. Claiming that this attack wasn't the Russians because Ohio has better election security than other states and the Russians couldn't find a proper way in isn't really valid. They hacked the DNC and RNC through 'relatively unsophisticated' means and the result was devastating. Sometimes the simplest answers are the best answers.

How are they to know that Ohio's election computers weren't networked? The only way they can find that out for sure is by attempting exactly what they just did.

And this is a Republican bringing this to light, not the Dems.

The point you're missing in your fanatical hatred of both Trump (somehow this is bound to have been an attempt to skew things in favour of Trump, of course) and the Russians is that it was so pointlessly specific (just in one state in some relatively unimportant elections), and so feeble and amateurish, that if this really is proof that He* is trying to influence Sacred American Democracy(TM) in favour of the Monster, then it's so small-time and amateurish that for Senator after Senator to stand up and loudly declaim that this is an Act of War on the United States just makes them look extremely silly. Besides, tenuous or what? "he says it originated in Panama but was traced to a Russian-owned company." Well, of course.

You're the only one speaking about Trump in this thread.

Where did you learn about hacking? The most effective method is often the most simple.

And what was so amateurish about this method? That it failed? If the computers hadn't been unnetworked (unlike those in other states) then it would have been successful.

And, again, you appear incredulous that Daddy-Putin would ever do something like this. You've went full-blown conspiracy theory nut when it comes to this subject. And, in fact, your continual, unshakable defence of Russia is mind-boggling. You simply refuse to even consider anything negative about Russia. It's weird, to say the least.

The fact is dedicated Russian government departments will be constantly trying to break into all American government and military systems, America will be doing the same, as will Britain, France etc, it's naive to think otherwise.

Indeed, but unlike the US Senate, the UK, China, Russia and basically every other country in the world will act in some way to prevent it from happening again. The Senate has done nothing.

In fact, Trump's administration has stripped the FEC, making it extremely difficult to not only prevent this from happening in the future, but also to investigating any election fraud at all that might happen.

And just watch, if Trump loses next year I'll bet a pound to a penny that he tries to claim election fraud and refuses to concede.
