A particular gene called CCR5 was removed from their genetic code before birth. Getting rid of this gene has been shown to make mice smarter and may have an effect on the girls’ cognitive abilities.

The reports vary on this but the gist of the story is the father is HIV positive and he tried using the CRISPR to remove a gene and make them immune. It failed.

They still don't know what the side effects are but the girls could have any number of chromosomal disorders.
