In a statement after her vote, Gabbard, who is also running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, released a statement, claiming that after doing her "due diligence in reviewing the 658-page impeachment report, I came to the conclusion that I could not in good conscience vote either yes or no.” Edited December 20, 2019 by bee
Farmer77 Posted December 20, 2019 #577 Share Posted December 20, 2019 Who’s Really in Charge of the Senate Impeachment Trial? Mitch McConnell thinks he’s calling the shots. He’s wrong. Quote Sen. Mitch McConnell supposes that it’s up to him to determine the way President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will proceed in the Senate. “Everything I do during this, I’m coordinating with the White House counsel,” he declared last week, and pledged to use his power as majority leader to assure Trump’s triumphant acquittal. But McConnell is wrong: It is Chief Justice John Roberts, not the majority leader, who will be making all the key decisions. This is the plain meaning of the Senate’s “Rules of Procedure and Practice” currently in force for the conduct of impeachments. These rules explicitly provide that the chief justice “shall” preside over the trial, that it is the “Presiding Officer” who “shall direct all forms of the proceedings,” and that he may “rule on all questions of evidence including, but not limited to, questions of relevancy, materiality, and redundancy of evidence.”

She kept delaying going for impeachment for a long time. Her party pushed her into it. Now she has no choice but to approach the Senate with the articles. I keep laughing at our media and late night comedians because they are so sure Trump has been impeached. They should know better than that, well not the clowns, but the media, absolutely. There is no impeachment until the Senate has the articles to open the trial, which will be run by the Senate and not the House. So, it will be presided over by the Chief Justice. We'll have to see who the Senate calls to testify. Trump will have his attorneys present I'm sure. Edited December 20, 2019 by susieice

+susieice Posted December 20, 2019 #592 Share Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Here's an interesting article from NBC. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/18/chief-justice-john-roberts-to-play-key-role-in-trump-impeachment-trial.html I didn't know this part. The rules say the chief justice “may rule on all questions of evidence.” Under those rules, an adaptation of which is expected to apply to the coming impeachment, a majority of senators may overrule the chief’s decisions. The GOP has a 53-member Senate majority. The last chief justice to preside over an impeachment trial, the late William Rehnquist, took a largely passive role in overseeing the trial, generally leaving procedural questions to the senators. Roberts, who clerked for Rehnquist in the early 1980s before joining the Reagan administration, has given no indication he plans to take a more interventionist role. Every impeachment trial has ALWAYS been a partisan stand-off, all the way back to Andrew Johnson. Actually, I found the Wikepedia article on the impeachment of Andrew Johnson rather interesting. +susieice Posted December 20, 2019 #595 Share Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Well this is interesting about that article in Christianity Today. I just heard it on ABC news and it hushed up George Stephanopoulos. https://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion/op-ed/ej-montini/2019/12/19/billy-grahams-magazine-wants-donald-trump-removed/2707052001/ Billy Graham's son, Franklin, who has aligned himself with Trump, condemned the editorial, saying, “My father would be embarrassed. It is not going to change anybody’s mind about Trump. There’s a liberal element within the evangelical movement. Christianity Today represents that.” On the other hand, Franklin's late father might be embarrassed by ... him. On that, only God knows. He said on the news that his father voted for Trump. At an impasse with Congress, Johnson offered himself directly to the American public as a "tribune of the people". In the late-summer of 1866, the president embarked on a national "Swing Around the Circle" speaking tour, where he asked his audiences for their support in his battle against the Congress and urged voters to elect representatives to Congress in the upcoming midterm election who supported his policies. The tour backfired on Johnson, however, when reports of his undisciplined, vitriolic speeches and ill-advised confrontations with hecklers swept the nation. he even has a touch of Trump about his apperance.....
