Five incredible facts about infinity

Recommended Posts

The Eternal Flame

Dec 09, 2019 In her book Beyond Infinity, Dr Eugenia Cheng explores the inner workings of infinity, a mysterious concept that we all know about from childhood, but never truly claim to understand. There are infinite facts in the book well, quite a lot at any rate, but here’s just a fraction for now...

Consider yourself infinitely wiser after these fascinating facts about this most curious of mathematical concepts.

If infinity is large without limit, then it would be impossible to add anything to it. Larger and smaller infinities appear to be mathematical abstractions  and paradoxical. Paradoxes generally indicate that there is something wrong with our understanding of the situation.

I won't be returning to 'ScienceFocus' - some of those facts are not facts at all, and most of them are just mathematical curiosities that are not reflected by any possible situation.  The first, about One plus Infinity not equalling Infinity plus One (on the basis of a silly hypothetical, impossible scenario and an illogical inference drawn from it), is particularly daft.

Infinity is just a mathematical construct, that has some use in problem solving.  As far anything actually being infinite... nope.
