Still Waters Posted December 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2019 The date was 25 July 1946. The location - Bikini Atoll. The event - only the fifth A-bomb explosion and the first-ever detonation under water. The pictures we've all seen: A giant mushroom cloud climbing out of the Pacific, sweeping up ships that had been deliberately left in harm's way to see what nuclear war was capable of. Now, 73 years later, scientists have been back to map the seafloor. A crater is still present; so too the twisted remains of all those vessels. "Bikini was chosen because of its idyllic remoteness and its large, easily accessible lagoon," explains survey team-leader Art Trembanis from the University of Delaware. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-50724632 2

quiXilver Posted December 10, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2019 (edited) Such Stupidity. It's a marvel... the shear magnitude of it. Stunningly short-sighted and idiotic. Edited December 10, 2019 by quiXilver
+Hammerclaw Posted December 10, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2019 Not even short-sighted, complete blindness. Even most scientists didn't completely grasp the dangers of radiation and fallout. They thought it was just a fantastically powerful explosive. It would go boom, they'd observe, take measurements and readings, put crews back on the ships that survived and sail'em back to port. They didn't have a clue.

The remnants of the German and Japanese fleets where brought there and blown up during testing, along with decommissioned US Vessels. But the frightening thing about these tests were the US Navy personnel sitting out at what they called a safe distance to watch. Many of these veterans suffered from Radiation Exposure and died of Cancers do to this exposure. it sad how many of our Veterans from the late 1940s thru the Late 1950s Died from radiation exposure due to Nuclear testing both on land and at sea and we're never compensated for it in any way.

The Eternal Flame Posted December 11, 2019 #8 Share Posted December 11, 2019 (edited) Enormous Craters Blasted in Seafloor by Nuclear Bombs Mapped for the First Time Dec 10, 2019 "It seemed as if Captain Marvel herself had punched the planet." SAN FRANCISCO — Today, all seems quiet in the remote Bikini Atoll, a chain of coral reef islands in the central Pacific. But more than 70 years ago, this region's seafloor was rocked by powerful atomic bombs detonated by the U.S. Army. https://www.livescience.com/mapping-reveals-bikini-atoll-nuclear-craters.html Edited December 11, 2019 by The Eternal Flame
