Still Waters Posted December 18, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2019 Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, the final film in the epic Star Wars series, will hit the big screens on December 19. Science fiction in general – and Star Wars in particular – is a hugely popular genre, much because of the titillating possibility that the mind-blowing technology we see on screen could one day work. But what is science and what is fiction in Star Wars? Could the technology be ahead of actual science? https://theconversation.com/star-wars-from-the-force-to-r2d2-does-the-science-hold-up-128822
+OverSword Posted December 18, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 18, 2019 (edited) No, the science does not hold up. Things flying in space do not fly as though they were in the air, Light sabers are impossible, and they wouldn't bother making a droid that nobody could understand. Humbug I say, Humbug! edit to add: Who cares I love Star Wars almost as much as Star Trek Edited December 18, 2019 by OverSword

toast Posted December 18, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 18, 2019 Hundreds of things that were SciFi in the past are reality today. Even a lot of things, and thinks as well, which came up before SciFi came into existence with that designation, became reality. SciFi is a kind of booster because imagination is the very first step towards something new.

Although, O.G. Star Trek had pretty much delved into science-fantasy territory... I mean, Conceptual beings?? Hyper-evolving manmade satellites fused with a living nebulae?? Olympian Gods? A 7,000-year old W.A.S.P.-looking Mesopotamian guy? Reality-warping manchilds? An ham-mongering William Shatner??? Then how about that Titanesc green space hand???
