Titan's atmosphere packs 10 times more mass than is held in the air around Earth. It is a thick smog, primarily nitrogen with poisonous substances like methane and ethane sprinkled in. Scientists had thought this stuff raining down on the surface would keep the moon largely covered in liquid and solid organic material.
