69 vehicle pile-up in Virginia injures 50+

Dozens of people have been injured in a pile-up involving more than 60 cars on a major interstate in Virginia.

Photos from the scene showed a tangled mass of metal, with car hoods crumpled, windows smashed and a red truck on top of another vehicle.

The crash happened shortly before 8am on Sunday on westbound Interstate 64 in York county near Williamsburg, Sgt Michelle Anaya of Virginia state police said. No fatalities were reported but it took crews several hours to clear the roadway and reopen all lanes of traffic.

Authorities do not yet know the cause of the crash, but fog and icy road conditions were contributing factors, Anaya said.

"On Sunday morning in the US state of Virginia, cars kept crashing into each other from 7.51am on the Queens Creek Bridge's Interstate 64 westbound lane in York County.

"Vehicles also crashed into each other on the eastbound lane as drivers rubbernecked the massive pile-up."

It happened not far from a construction zone. Traffic was reduced to two lanes. "It got really foggy really fast". There were 11 with serious injuries but thank goodness only two are in critical condition although law enforcement isn't sure of the extent of all the injuries. There were 51 people taken to 4 hospitals. There's a photo gallery at the end of this link.
